Should I shoot if Lucy is at 172?

It's been 12 hours. I just started her Friday, and she's been between 265-324 every day for the past three days (since diagnosed Thursday). So she's had just four injections. I promise I will try learn to use the spreadsheet tomorrow. It will probably take me all day to learn. I tested her five minutes after she ate.

If you have trouble with the spreadsheet, just send me a pm (button on the LH bottom of this page)

The 172 was just after she ate? We tell brand new diabetics not to shoot under 200 but to wait 20 minutes, without feeding and retest. Lots of people do shoot under 200, but only after they have lots of data to give them an idea of what the insulin might do. I think, since you did feed, I would wait for at least 2 hours and take her blood level again. (The idea is that food raises blood sugar levels and it will take about 2 hours for the number to be not "food influenced".) If she is above 200 and it will fit into your schedule to shoot again in 12 hours, give some insulin then - maybe .5 units.

It certainly doesn't look like she needs much insulin and it is better to be cautious at first, until you see how the insulin is working.

If this really messes up your 12/12 schedule, I would wait until the normal time you were going to shoot the next dose.

Does that make sense?

It went up to 210 in a half hour and I had to leave our house so I gave her her injection before I was able to read this post. I will be home in 2 hours. Should I test her when i get back or just watch her? She's getting pretty mad about all the poking. She hears that beep and wants to get outta there.

Since the 210 was influenced by food, I would test her when you can, just to see how the insulin is working.

Do you sure give her a treat after each poke? My cats have enjoyed PureBites and Bonito Flakes. The trick is to get to associate the poke with a treat she loves. We also used the kitty burrito with Oliver at first - wrapping him in a towel with only his head showing.

It is hard until you get some data and can make some dosing predictions based on the past. But we will help until you get there.

She is basically flat at 3.5 which is fine. Any chance you could get a number around +6 tonight? They will help you see how low the insulin is taking her.
