Should I increase dose now? Guidance needed.

I have held Timmy's Vetsulin dose at 1.5 units a.m. and p.m. for 7 doses to try to level him out. I posted about 4 days ago where he was high at AMPS and then low at PMPS. It seems like he is creeping back up though. Do I continue to hold to the 1.5, or do I need to change doses?

I looked at his SS and don't see any green nadir numbers so an increase is a good idea. I suggest trying 1.75 u for now.

Having a hard time getting the different syringes from my vet. He is pleased that I am home testing, but wouldn't budge on lowering doses in those increments. I don't care, I'm eyeballing the 1.5 units. I will eyeball the 1.75 units too. It would just be more precise with the other syringes. Frustrating though.

Is your vet refusing to order U40 syringes with half unit marks because he doesn't want you making fractional changes in dose? Many people order those syringes from www.adwdiabetes.com and I don't think a prescription is needed.

Yes! I'm beginning to see. I also realized that I was not asking for help enough. Can't be an island with FD. Can't begin to thank you all!
You're right about that! We can do so much better by sharing/learning. Over time you learn to trust the advice here and it's better/more detailed/based on more experience than most vets are able to give.

No, he did not want me to fractional dose. I wasn't even going to talk with him about it, but the office staff wouldn't let me change to the syringes with the half unit markings. I have been getting the syringes from his office and I did not realize that I could go elsewhere. Thank you for the link, I will be going on and hopefully they won't need a prescription.

You could call the place and ask whether you need a vet's prescription for the syringes. I know that in some states human pharmacies ask for a prescription for syringes. Things are freer here in Canada - I can buy Lantus OTC as well as syringes.

I already trust the advice here. I just have to reach out for help more than I have. I love my vet, he is awesome, but he, like most vets I'm finding out, does not understand how complex FD is, and how careful the dosing has to be. If I hadn't found this site and started home testing, my Timmy would not be here. I think that is why I still have the deer in the headlight look about me. :)

I understand, Susan. I like my vet a lot too. She advised a lot of the right things like low carb wet food, doing a BG curve at home, etc. BUT - there was no mention of testing before feeding/dosing, she didn't advise urine ketone testing in case a litter box aversion developed, and she was certain that Lantus dose changes of 0.25 u were impossible. Monitoring was strictly a weekly BG curve, change dose by 0.5 u if needed, repeat. I did almost 4 months of weekly curves and got nowhere. I've since learned that a curve is a poor substitute for daily monitoring because you might by capturing data on a day when there's a bounce going on, etc. My vet wasn't familiar with the bounce concept either - Somogyi effect yes, bouncing as we understand it, no.

I was slower on the uptake than many who come here. My cat was diagnosed in January last year but I didn't start following the FDMB way until mid- August 2016. I was clueless to put it bluntly. However, better late than never and even though Teasel is extremely unpredictable, I understand him MUCH better.
