Should I Increase Dosage?

Catee is back on the Purina DM. He would not eat Young Again or the Hills M/D.

I am giving him 2 units since he went back on Purina... about 2 days.

He is averaging high 200's preshot, mid to high 100's at nadir. The last time I did a dose increase it was on the 21st through 23rd. On the 22nd is when he went from a 99 nadir to 437.

So I am unsure if I should go up to 2.25 or not.

He needs to get lower, still drinking and urinating a lot. Today he has seemed uncomfortable and sitting at his spot when he isn't feeling well.

Would greatly appreciate looking at his SS and some advice. I apologize if I seem to be repeating myself on these posts.

He sure has varying responses to the same dose. Like going down to 168 for a preshot on two units on the 24th while staying flat today and only dropping 100 points for the whole cycle.

I think I 'd stick with two units and give him a while to settle in. I'd worry that you'd get lows for nadirs or preshots if you increase.

The Purina is dry?

Yes the Purina is Dry. On the 24th is when he ate Young Again Zero Carbs, so it resulted in a lower number than usual.

So the Young Again looks like it will have a real positive effect on his numbers. Wonder what would happen if you mixed the Purina and the Young again together and then gradually increased the percentage of the Young Again?

It can be a real uphill battle to feed the higher carb and get the numbers down. (like a human diabetic eating donuts and trying to take enough insulin to stay in good numbers) It will take extra work on your work, increasing the dose by tiny increments until you get a dose that balances the food.

Have you tried Stella And Chewey's freeze dried food? Some cats really like it.

For some reason he will eat the Young Again one day and then the next he turns away from it. I worry about mixing it because he seems so sensitive to food change. He would not eat a majority of the day after he ate Young Again. I know if he would eat it, his numbers would definately drop but there is something about it that bothers him. Like it upsets his tummy and he starts scratching a lot after eating it.

On the Stella and Chewy's, I thought I looked it up and it is high carb. I will check again.

He has had trouble with this food since 2011. He will just stop eating and I will buy different kinds of food trying to get him to eat.

His PMPS was 320, so don't know what to do. I can't test him for keotones either because what I was sent from amazon, they had blacked out the label with the expiration date on it. So I had to send it back. Buying a new one from the american diabetes warehouse.

Just really worried about him, the drinking and urinating what it is doing to his kidneys.

If you are able to monitor at nadir, you could do a tiny increase; if not, go with what is safe for him.
The food response you're describing could be allergy, intolerance. or perhaps inflammatory bowel disease. Maybe start tracking ingredients to see if his food problems happen with specific items - chicken, peas, etc.

I just thought I'd throw this out to you but I had good luck with a dry food that was recommended to me by someone on the forum called Wysong Epigen. I ordered 2 bags from 1-800-pet-meds; fish and chicken flavors. I got it as a transition food for Hank as I was trying to get him on wet food. Hanks a picky eater so I was a little concerned that he wouldn't eat it but he loved it! It is low carb but no one seems to know how low carb it is. It dropped Hank's numbers. It was $13 for an 8lb bag. I tried the fish first and when bag was just about gone, mixed with chicken flavor. I think he liked the fish best though. I heard that if you go to the Wysong website that it's cheaper and they'll send you some samples with your order.

Hope this helps.

Would going up to 2.20 be too much of a jump?

I can monitor nadir at night but not morning.

I am leaning towards him being allergic to the ingredients to Young Again as when they changed their food last year he did the same and stopped eating it then. Not sure what is in it that would do that.

Kimmie, thank you for telling me about Wysong, I actually tried that when he was first sick and he did like it.... for awhile but then stopped eating it. Did you get the Epigen? Do a search on it if you are still feeding it to Hank. There are many people saying they changed the ingredients and it is making their dog, cat, and ferrets sick. Just want to let you know that.... it is pretty recent that this happened. Look on Amazon at some of the reviews.

If he is going to continue with Purina for awhile, I guess an increase should be okay. Yes, I'd plan it on a day/night when you can monitor.

I'd not give up on trying to switch him to wet. It may be that he will need the higher dose until he is consistently eating low carb. Have you tried FortiFlora?

Thanks for the info on Wysong. Hank never got sick on it though. No, he's not eating it any longer since he's eating the wet food. I'm with Sue, It would be best to switch him to all wet, no dry. Sue can attest to this, it took me almost 3 months to switch Hank to wet food. He had no interest in it. I tried everything! Hank just didn't realize that it was food. I finally thought of squishing up Hank's favorite high carb treat, his "kitty candy" and sprinkling it on top of the wet food. TaDa!!!!! I did this for about 4 days, while decreasing the kitty candy crumbs. You should see and hear how Hank meows for the wet food! :) Too funny! I did have to switch to 9 Lives wet food flavors with 3-5% carbs cause the Friskies was too high in carbs for Hank.

The treats are Purina Whisker Lickin's soft treats. Hank goes nuts over them!

Hope this helps.

Kimmie sending you a PM, I have a couple of questions.

Sue, yep tried the FortiFlora, he will lick it but not eat it. I think the thing will be adding some of the dry food on top or some of his treats.
