Should I give insulin?

Hi,

So my cat is going to have amputation surgery tomorrow morning. The vet said he shouldn't eat for 6-8 hours, but what about insulin?
We have an appointment at 10am and usually he would get insulin at 9am.
I'm worried if he has surgery without any insulin and what if his glucose is high during that time? Is it going to be a big risk?

The vet's office is likely to open early and you could call.

One consideration is that anesthesia can lower BG levels. Generally, for a dental procedure, depending on the vet, they will instruct you to skip or to give a partial dose. The risk is not that BG levels will be high. The risk is if they are too low.

I suspect your kitty is going to be hospitalized for a few days. I would bring your insulin along as a back up (the vet may not want to use whatever insulin you are giving your cat). They can manage the insulin while your cat is recovering.

Some vets say ½ insulin if BG tin the morning is as expected. It also depends upon dose and normal BGs. You did not include referece to a spreadsheet so I cant give a good recommendation, just ask vet.

They said "fast 6-8 hours and no medication" It means insulin too right? Because he is also getting antibiotics rn, I'm just worried. His glucose has been pretty okay recently about 5-9 mmol/l instead of 10-25mmol/l he has been in the past
