Hello, it’s me, again. So yesterday my cat did not eat in the afternoon and like at 2 am I got him to eat a bit. At 6 am he ate a bit of food with some treats. I don’t inject him until 10:20 tho. And that’s when I give him another snack. My question is: should I inject him? Or should I wait until this afternoon when I get test strips to test his sugar level. I also did not inject him last night because I didn’t feel comfortable because he had not eaten. I give him the Lantus insulin. And 1 unit at in the am and pm. His vet don’t open until Monday but I already sent her an email. Waiting for her response.

Without data it's hard to say whether skipping is a good or bad idea. Since he's not eating very well, I'm hesitant to say to skip completely simply because no food + not enough insulin can cause ketones to develop. I know that answer's not terribly helpful but without data yet it's hard to determine what the safer route is.

Thank you Elizabeth @Panic I figured that since she has no data at all
Have a good day Elizabeth :bighug::cat:

I will skip this morning but as soon as I get the test strips I will update. When the vet checked him he was 400-something. That was 3 weeks ago. He’s really mean and I didn’t have the money to buy a glucose tester. Yesterday I found my dads but his test strips where from 2019.(he does not take care of himself) I will also update my signature when I get the test strips. He did eat a few minutes ago. He almost finished half a can. He also does not seem nauseous like yesterday. He’s still napping a lot tho.

Here’s your last post. I’m linking it for continuity. Welcome to the FDMB.

I
had to look there to see that you are using Lantus. When you have a moment please add a signature. For now just let us know what you are feeding, date of diagnosis, and that you are giving Lantus. Did he have ketones at diagnosis? As you are learning and just starting to test I would get some test strips to check his urine for ketones.

I give him purina Friskies wet food since his diagnosis. Which he got diagnosed on 12/7/20. I’m giving him one unit of Lantus on the am and pm. I will try to get him those strips too. He was not tested for ketones when he got diagnosed. She just have him fluids and medicine for his nausea. But he was eating back then. Even with his nausea.

What medication was he given for nausea and were you given more to give at home as needed? The nausea concerns me and is likely responsible for the finicky appetite. There are many potential causes. With diabetic cats the first things I think of are ketones and pancreatitis.

It just says anti nausea. Here is a copy of his check up that day.

Also, no she did not give me anymore.

It looks lime he was given two meds for nausea, cerenia and ondansetron and buprenorphine for pain. Those are standard for pancreatitis. They should have sent you home with all of those. Is your vet’s office open today? If so I would give them a call. The shots received don’t last long term. Pancreatitis if that’s what he had can be chronic and return.

They open on Monday. I sent them an email yesterday but I have yet to get a response. I’ll give them a call and see what I can do.

I got the test his blood sugar as of 6:37 pm is 438 mg/dL Should I give him the insulin shot? He has eaten a bit in the morning. I’m going to syringe feed him in a bit also. He’s more active now that he was yesterday. I couldn’t find the other strips at my Walmart I’ll probably have to order them later.

Yea, I would give the insulin. He’s high.
ok i will. i will also now update my signature. and how do i get him steady? should this one be the last dose i give him tonight? and then start in the am? also, thank you so much for the help. and the info.

With Lantus you give insulin every 12 hours, never sooner and only when safe to shoot. When did you last give insulin?

and i just injected him... hes also eating really good now. if its 12 hours then tomorrow i should start shooting him at 7 am and then again at 7 pm. but i have a question. im going to start working to have money for his insulin but i would have to inject him at least at 5:30 am. how should i change his time? is it safe for me to do?

You would do it in 15 minute increments each time, that's the best way. So shoot at 6:45, then 6:30, etc.

I’m glad he’s eating now. You can also move the shot 30 minutes each 24 hours. Keep asking questions.
