Should I feed yet?

Today the second day Ms. Sanut is on Lantus. She started out at 225 yesterday and ended the day with 239. After spending a week or so of fluctuating 300-500 on Novolin, I considered it a big success. I feed her normally at the amps/pmps with another meal in between. This morning her number was 54 and about 30 minutes later 48. Should I feed her or keep waiting or skip? She was previously on Humulin N/Novolin N and went into remission, but almost 2 weeks ago came out. I'm currently feeding her Fancy Feast (the lowest (3) in carbs/highest in protein). I'm about to test her again in about 15 minutes (1 hr mark). What should I do if it is in the same range and can I feed her?

Also, i'm giving her .75U.

Have you read this information about shooting low numbers on Lantus: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=147

You can stall - wait to feed and give insulin and test
You can give a token dose - which is a smaller amount than you normally use
You can skip the dose

I don't know enough about your situation to advise whether to skip or not, you may want to post on the lantus forum to get more immediate assistance.

But if your cat is hungry, then you can give a small amount of food. After all you don't want to starve the cat.

I was waiting to feed her because of something I read on the forum about waiting to see if her numbers are still going down or going up. Like, if i gave her food it would falsely increase her and if I shot based on that I could bring her too low later. Is that right? I believe she is on her way back up, so I just fed her and will wait till tonight to shoot her. She had such high and low numbers with Novolin i'm not sure how to take the Lantus. Yesteday was the first day in almost two weeks she was relatively stable.

Yes the food can change the BG level and you can get a food reading. However, I used to let Maui eat when she wanted and tested and it was fine.

I understand the concern about being so new with Lantus - my suggestion is that for now you want to have a shoot/no shoot number and typically when starting out that number could be 200 or even 150. As you build data and get accustomed to lantus that number can drop and disappear altogether.

She was at the 57/60 at the +1 mark and I fed her at the same time (+1). At +2 she is at 79. It worries me that she will be rising throughout the day. Her previous numbers (since she came out of remission) before Lantus were mostly in the 300-400 range, except for every other day being in the 100+. That was on Novolin, so I guess i'm still trying to feel out Lantus.

What if she goes to say 200+ by the +6 mark? Do I just let her keep rising until the +12 and then shoot her starting dose? I'm trying to test her every hour to collect data (2nd day).

Please post on the lantus tight regulation forum for dosing advice. Adding stalling, dosing advice. I can't give that advice as I'm still learning.

you may want to give her ears a break and not test every hour.

If she goes up above say 200 at +6 - if you give insulin then you will either have to continue giving at that time or slowly move back to the correct time - which can be done by moving 15 minutes BID or 30 minutes once a day until you get back to your time.

You can call this morning a skipped shot and essentially start over again tonight. I do suggest that you may want to start posting on the lantus forum - as there are people there 24/7 who can help you, unlike on health where you may not get as quick an answer as you like.

also I just looked at your ss and so far she is well within NORMAL range - so give her ears a break and test again at +7 or +8. For the U section - you can write in 0.0 and in the notes, you can put skipped am shot.
