my cat Is on hills prescription diet MD and I know about fantasy but I should I buy him the wysong epigen dry food? what flavor is the best for them I thought the fish wasn't good for them

No. Dry food isn't good for cats. It tends to make them gain weight, leaves them somewhat dehydrated, and does nothing for the teeth.

Hi Laurei!

Would you tell us more about why you are feeding the dry M/D food? Vet recommended? Your cat is a dry food addict? Something else?

Is your kitty on insulin? What kind?

thanks everyone yes the vet recommended theThe Hills MD glucose management but he does like these and Fancy Feast so should I just not give him any dry food

he was at 490 with no insulin a month ago now he's on four units of prozincstill highll 380 but the vet TestS an hour after I inject them I think it should be tested later on so would be lower

Vet stress can elevate the glucose level 100 to 180 mg/dL. That is why it is important to test at home; you get more valid readings.

If you change the food to lower carb, you must change the insulin dose to match it. Food changes may drop the glucose 100 mg/dL and drop the needed insulin as much as 2 units.

Context. It's important to have blood glucose readings before you give any insulin and then some readings after you give insulin so you know what sort of an impact a particular dose is having for your cat.

One hour after Prozinc injection will probably not show much of a change. It takes time for any insulin to start working and show it's effects. You also want to have some idea of the nadir or low point in the insulin cycle to help you know what type of adjustments you should make in the dose. That low or nadir varies with each cat. It's why one of our mantras here is ECID or Every Cat Is Different. It's one reason we are such strong advocates for home testing.

We strongly recommend that you are home testing before you make a diet change, like switching entirely to wet food. When I was switching Wink from dry to wet, there were dramatic changes in his BG levels that required changes in the dose.

If you are home testing, you can monitor these BG levels and help keep your kitty safer.

I would not drop the dry food entirely at this point unless you also drop the insulin dose dramatically.
