Hello everyone! I accidently gave insulin shot to the wrong cat! I feel like such an idiot! I gave 2 units of Lantus to said cat at 12:30 central. I have been testing every 30 mins. since. I have been giving gravy every 30 minutes and karo syrup.

Hi Kimberly! Glad to see you made it over here. I too will be heading to bed soon.....I think.

I posted in the lantus forum here for you too and linked this thread as I saw some members there posting in the last few minutes. Hopefully that keeps you some eyes going thru the night for you.

it's not as fast moving as facebook can be but there are members here from around the world which usually means there's help available all hours of the day and night

We just want to make sure you have as much help as you might need....be that people here or on Facebook

Good luck tonight Kimberly .....and because you're going to need it, here's a few cups of coffee for you :coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee::coffee:

Kimberly,

because of the time differences can you fill in the blanks here, that way everyone's on the same page

gave shot of 2 units lantus
tested immediately and got 89
+? 90
+? 119
+? 98

the ?'s would be how much time had past since you gave the shot. so if the 90 was half hour later do it as +1/2 or + 0.5
i want to say i understood that you were testing ever half hour? if that is correct it would be

+0.5 90
+1 119
+1.5 98

does that make sense?

Sounds like you are doing everything you can at the moment...testing and feeding. Onset of the insulin will probably be soon. Just in case you need it, do you have the address and telephone number of a vet or emergency vet. I'm not sure what time of the day it is there.

ETA I would not feed too much just yet as you don't want to fill him up. You may need him to eat later.

Yes, thank you!

Central USA would put her an hour behind me, so 2:15am currently. It will be a long night not knowing how the non-diabetic cat responds to the insulin, no way to know if the kitty will nadir earlier or later. Good advice to lookup a 24hour clinic now in case it is needed later. I use Lev not lantus, but the insulin will be starting to kick in or will be soon. I'll be up for a bit longer but not much as long as my cat starts to climb. Keep that high carb food ready, I'm guessing it will come in handy tonight.

Hang in there Kimberly, hope everything works out with the kitty.

That is great he is managing to maintain a normal BGL. But we don't know when the peak is for him so I think you really need to keep testing a bit longer. Has he been eating at all during the last few hours?
If it were me, I would test every hour for a few more hours to keep him safe.

just up and caught up.......sounds like kitty did ok. on facebook kimberly mentions that a nurse friend was going to come over and keep an eye on kitty while she got some sleep so that may be why she's quiet

Hi, Kimberly.

Bron tagged me so I'm stopping by to see how you and your kitty are doing. You're not the first who's done this and it sounds like you've done all of the right things.

How often have you been testing? I see your +5.5 was 105. If I'm estimating correctly, that was a couple of hours ago. Do you have any additional test data?

Hi Kimberly, I'm around also now, and will check back here periodically.

Would be great to see another test to check that your kitty isn't dropping further....? Lantus can continue to drop late on into the cycle in some cats......
Please update us when you can.

Eliz

@Bron and Sheba - well done; and nighty night, sleep tight....Zzzzzz....

Hello everyone! Puck is doing great; we made it!! Thank you so, so much for hanging in there with me. I am so grateful for this community; I couldn't have done it without your advice and support. I'm so overwhelmed at how everyone came to my rescue. You are all so wonderful!!!! xoxo <3

So glad everything turned out fine. What a scary experience!!! :nailbiting:

I am actually amazed that your non-diabetic kitty did not drop more with 2 units of insulin on board even with the syrup and HC you were giving. One of my FD kitties is on 1 unit right now and if I gave her 2 units she would probably go into hypo numbers.

This may sound like a funny question, but how old is your insulin?
