The excess lev pulled from cart is always shot out onto kitchen floor here ( lantus training)

~My floor is very well regulated, thank you!

Was talking to fellow lev user a few days ago that said she shoots it back into cart and gets full use from cart until last drop- 9 months or more of same cart!

My carts last about 3 or 4 months and I use to last drop, but do not return excess. numbers are good to the end.

Do any of you return excess to cart? How long do you use the cart? Are numbers consistent all the way to the end?

Thanks.

Never shoot insulin back into cart; it's not constructed to receive and also, you have contaminated the insulin because the coating on the inside of the syringe is now on the inside of the insulin that is shot back into the cart.
That was my belief anyways. Do not shoot back into the cart.

I am sort of divided on this from my own experiences. I have used vials almost to the last with no problem and I do shoot insulin back in while trying to get rid of bubbles. The same with the carts that I have used. But I am not sure about this present vial that I am using. Seems to be either something wrong with it or something else going on and I am only half way through it. So I will be ordering some carts soon. Those I seem to be able to use almost to the last even though squirting back in - actually seem to get stronger towards the end.

ETA correction - Seems the vial lasts about three and half months but the last one had a very small amount left and it was getting difficult to draw also started wondering about its efficacy. Looks like the carts lasted 'about' six weeks.

(I didn't word this very well, sorry. In a hurry!)

I shoot back into the cart. Have since I started using lev. And I am about to use up my third cart - seems fine, but is has been open for 6 months so if it was going bad I would not know why - age or shooting back.

In a related vein: When I had to leave Beau with the sitter for 8 days and he was going OTJ so getting .05u as needed, I was told I could not predraw syringes due to the contamination thing. One of the lev folks did some research and it seemed that the make up of lantus reacts to the syringe coating (acidity?) where lev does not. I predrew all Beau's doses and he did not need any (I set a somewhat high do not shoot number of 150). I ended up using them after I got back over the next few weeks and they were definitely ok and then insuin working.

All I can say is, go from your experience. My experience of 3 years using Lev flexpens (3 years end of next month, but still one of the longer users still on the board, so that counts for something and which means I'm on my third box of pens) - every single one of them has been fine till the end, and even when I thought they weren't and opened a new pen, the regulation problems we were having persisted so it was not the insulin going bad.

Here is how I draw from the pen - I over draw slightly, then WITHOUT WITHDRAWING THE NEEDLE, I push excess back in to pen till I get just about to the right amount. Then I fine tune with the needle withdrawn. I DO NOT put needle back in to the cartridge ever, even if I screw up and need to redraw dose, I get a new syringe.

I don't care to get in to a L vs L debate, but if there's truth to Lantus being susceptible to contamination, then don't push any Lantus back in. But from my experience, Lev is fine and whatever lube is on the inside of those syringes must not effect it. I've pushed plenty of Lev back in to flexpens.

I really wish people would stop worrying about this as far as Lev's concerned.

I have always thought that as long i don't withdraw the needle, i can push excess back into the cartridge. Works for us and we've been using Lev for over a year (five 3ml carts last us exactly 1 year) - each cart right down to the very end with no probs. I'm thankful Lev is so flexible.

I have been using Levemir for 3 years, 9 months, I ALWAYS overdraw and push back into the pen/cartridge, and have always used the insulin to the last drop with no problems.

I too followed the practice of shooting lev back into the cart and using them to the last drop AND prefilled syringes when I needed to work and mom had to shoot. Spot did well, as you can see....he's otj!
