Shoot or not to shoot

Diagnosed September. Lantus. Archie is 11 years old. He Did great at 2 units early on then numbers stayed high. Have been monitoring closely and numbers continued to stay high so vet moved us to 4 units. (Over time) My cat will only eat dry. He came that way as a young cat when we rescued him.

Finally we have noticed great improvement this week. Within a week or two we have gotten a new vial of lantus, we switched to Wysong epigen 90 and he moved to 4 units. Yesterday was in 200s. This morning preshot and pre food he was 174. 30 minutes later after eating he is 141. This is unusual so I did not shot. I don't want it to go high again so a part of me thought I should move to 2 units. It's been 1.5 hours now since I fed him. I'm going to rest again.

Early on he got under 90 (after diagnosis) so we moved to 1 unit per vet but he jumped up again so we stayed at 2....until we steadily had to increase.

Do you have a spreadsheet? ☺️ @Christie & Maverick is a pro!
Well we have all our numbers but I don't have it in a spreadsheet. Good idea! Thank you. The vet got back to me and, as I also felt I should do, I gave him a half dose. I feel good about this decision as we've been monitoring him since September. I've gotten to know his trends and I don't want it high again. I'm hoping the food is really helping and we will continue this trend....Thanks for the tip.

Hi and welcome! As Vanessa said, it really is very helpful to see a spreadsheet before being able to offer any dose advice. Since we have members in different times zones, using a spreadsheet helps to see where the BG tests are relative to your preshot, +1, +2, etc. For example, when you got the test of 203 it’s difficult to know when that was relative to your usual preshot time.

In general, if the preshot number is lower than you are used to, it can help to stall (do not feed) and then retest in 20 minutes to see if the number is rising on its own without the influence of food, and if it is to a point where you are comfortable shooting.

You may find if you have recently changed the dry food from high carb to lower carb that can often make a difference in insulin needs and BG levels.

There is some good information here Sticky - New? How You Can Help Us Help You!

It includes information on how to create a spreadsheet, or as Vanessa said we have members who can help you create one.

Hope this helps a little, please post if you have any questions.
