Does anyone know how to understand the varying numbers on the Prozinc bottles re: expiration. I purchased a 40 unit bottle on 7/20/10. Fred went into remission (again) within 1 month. He was OTJ until this Thanksgiving when he found some honey ham scraps and BOOM, he spiked to 300.

The Prozinc bottle says its good until 2/12. The vet's label on the outside box says the expiration is 12/11. When I checked in with my Vet to get her advice on shot amount, she said Prozinc isn't good after 90 days.

Gradually increased the insulin from .5 to 1.5. His normal numbers are from 80-110. Tonight, with diet monitoring, Fred is at 217. I gave him 1.5 just in case the Prozinc isn't as potent as when originally purchased. I wouldn't have thought it would take so long to get him back down after his dietary misbehaving....and, of course, it could be something else entirely.

He eats well, hasn't lost weight, has his old habits (indoor-outdoor) and doesn't seem to be eating or peeing inappropriately. So, the insulin needs to work to get him back OTJ. One more thing... he had Hemobart early in the summer and was treated with steroids and antiobiotics. He was pronounced totally healthy by mid-July.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

i would think as long as you are testing and getting a decent response from it, the insulin should be good. if you use it, test, and see nothing happening, then i'd perhaps consider a new vial

i haven't used prozinc myself, just pzi, so i posted in pzi isg 'cause several there are using prozinc and may know more details

Hi Kathleen & Fred,

I bought my bottle of Prozinc on 7/4/10 and have used it every day since. I havn't noticed any dimished potency.

Thanks for the feedback. I have the number for the manufacturer - lab and will call them tomorrow for their stats. These expiration numbers may be the "shelf life" and not necessarily the potency life after the seal of broken. This stuff isn't cheap, so I wanted to know before I open this new vial at $95 per.

I'll post what the lab says for your information.

Thanks, again.

You purchased a 10ml bottle of U40 insulin. U40 means there are 40 units of insulin per
ml of liquid volume.

40 x 10ml = 400 units of insulin in that 10ml vial.

ALL human insulins are U100 (100 units of insulin per ml of liquid volume).

Some pet insulins are U100 and some are U40.

Many people over in PZI land can get up to 6 months out of their vial. It all depends on the life the vial has seen since opening. I was never able to get much more than 3 months when we used it though.
