Good afternoon all -

Wondering - what is the shelf life of insulin that has been drawn into a needle? I recall seeing a thread where someone was dosing the needles for their petsitter in advance. I extracted some last night, and ended up with a NO SHOT because the cat wouldn't eat. I'm assuming it's still good, but wonder for how long? Also, what is the prep for it - roll the needle slowly to mix up the content?

Thanks in advance1

Depends on the insulin....what insulin are you using.

Lantus, Levimir should not be pre-drawn at all.

You can make up a sample syringe using colored water (Apple juice works well),
so your sitter can look at that syringe and draw the actual insulin so it looks the same.

You gently roll a vial of a suspension-type insulin (PZI) before drawing.
So that you get a well-mixed solution.

Once drawn into the syringe, you do not need to roll again because you
will be shooting the whole amount into the cat.

Thank you!

Shooting Prozinc. I like the idea about the sample for petsitters. Sounds a lot like the advice for practising Micro-doses!
