Shelby - part deux

For a while, we were holding steady-ish at 300s AMPS and PMPS. Then, yesterday and today, it's been in the 400s. I DID bump her from 0.5U to 1U two days ago. I'm going to do a couple of BG today and a curve tomorrow to see where she's at.

We've been using 1/2 a can of FF classics and a 1/2 "brick" of Primal Pet food at each meal for the past several weeks - which have had her at the 300 numbers. If it's just FF, she won't eat it.

I know she's not getting into any civvie food because we pick up all food before we leave in the morning. She can't get into the room where I have my hedgehogs (they also eat cat food) because the door is closed.

Should I try to leave out some low carb dry throughout the day? I get home from work 2-3 hrs before her PM shot, so I can monitor if she ate.

Can't catch her in the box to check for ketones, so I may run her to the vet so they can do it, and a curve to see where our #s are at and how they match up.

Thoughts??

Your curve will be interesting. I hope that we'll see she drops low midcycle and bounces back up; that'd explain those higher preshot numbers. Or it may be time for a little raise in dose, if she stays higher and flatter.

The curve at the vet won't tell you much. There is no formula for factoring vet stress so you won't be able to compare vet curve to home curve with any accuracy.

Is the Primal dry? If you have to feed dry, maybe try Young Again. It's one of the lowest carb dry foods. It's only available on line but they will send a sample to see if she will eat it. I am guessing you've tried all the tricks for wet:' adding warm water and making a gravy/putting Parmesan cheese on top or dressing with favorite treat/adding FortiFlora/adding tuna water. Have you tried some other brands beside Fancy Feast? Some people like Friskies or Sheba or Welluva. Maybe a trip to the store with the food chart in hand and pick up some other low carb possibilities?

Thanks Sue!
Primal is freeze-dried where you crumble it up and add water. It's basically dehydrated raw meat, bones, etc. Tuna juice helps, warm water/gravy does not. I warm up the fresh from the frige food for about 8 seconds so it's warm...that helps a bit. Haven't tried the FortiFlora or Parmesan, but will try them tonight.
I'll go to the pet store tonight too and get some other brands to see what works.

Good thoughts on the vet and stress.

Hi Nikki~ I never could catch Bubba in the box either but a trick is to crumble up some saran wrap and place the crumble in each of the 4 cornors of the box. ( Bubba always pees in the corners ) and then check to see if some urine pooled in the saran wrap that you can dip the ketone stick in. Most cats will urinate sometime after they have eaten.

I ended up purchasing a ketone meter . It was the Abbott Precision Xtra. The meter was only about 30 -35 dollars but the strips were pricey. It made it easier for me and Bubba had ketones so I had to stay on top of it. If you go that route, tag me and I can tell the cheapest place in Canada to get the strips.
