Shakespeare is new on Lantus
We did a curve today and his peak is at 9 hours
Here are the numbers

pre insulin 267
Insulin at 5:30am
+3 - 275
+5 - 246
+7 - 183
+9 - 137
+10 - 147
+11 - 167
+11.5 gave a little chop meat
+13 - 281
Why would he peak so late and why after having a little chop meat would he jump so high?

not bad numbers at all!

It is hard to tell much about patterns based on just one curve. Some cats do peak that late (or later) on Lantus. As you gather more tests then you'll start to see more.

Also, it is probably not the chopped meat that made the numbers go up. Probably the insulin was just starting to wear off. Many of us find that our cats' numbers go up quickly at the end of the cycle. There are lots of other possible reasons. Again, more tests will make his patterns more clear as time goes on.

Good job with testing!

How long has Shakespeare been diabetic, and what dose is he on? What is he eating?

Ok well here is his story: in May of this year I took him to the vet and his sugar was 126 so the vet put him on a special diet
that is when he started losing wight(6 lbs in 2 months and drinking water like crazy) took him back and was put on insulin, Humulin at first, but his numbers were all over and his neuropathy got really bad so I switched vets and he changed him insulin right away to Lantus, which he has only been on for 3 weeks but his numbers are all over the place and the neuropathy is getting really bad. I give him 5 pills of methcobolane a day which I think is why he can walk at all now.

Not sure where to go from here or why the neuropathy is so bad if his numbers are not that high

How long how you been doing this and is it working for your cat?

Thanks for helping and talking, it has only been 6 months but it seems like forever

oh and I forgot, he is on 2/12 units twice a day and I only feed him the wet food now,
Fancy Feast tender beef seems to havae the least amount of carbs

Welcome to Lantus Land Shakespeare :-D
You will find this a very nice place to be, and there is a wealth of knowledge to be shared.
Libby has been doing this a long time, and she is very very smart. Listen to what she says, as she helps a lot of people with their cats.
Hope to see you post daily.

Welcome to Lantus Land.

You may want to take a look at the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board. There is a huge amount of information there about the dosing protocol that we use here, how to handle Lantus, posting conventions, our slang, how to do a curve, and important concepts like the shed.

Most of us keep track of our kitty's numbers with a spreadsheet. It keeps everything in one place and it allows you to see trends in the numbers. If you want to use the spreadsheet, the template is in the Tech Support center that I linked.

What is the milligram dose on the methylcobalamine that you're giving? It sounds like a lot of the methyl-B12. Also, there are a variety of brands on the market, some of which contain sugar or starch so you need to read the ingredients carefully.
