Shadow- dosing

Hi!

So, we went ahead and tried the 3units once a day. I know, many didn't agree with it, but we tried. It didn't work- surprise ;-)

We're at 2 units twice a day. His numbers are reading higher, but I'm trying to hold off on a dose increase. I'm hoping his body is trying to sort out the change.

I will say he's much happier now!

I was trying to find other conversations/posts of how you are where you are and had a hard time.

I am guessing that you are a little torn between listening to your vet and the folks here.
I've been here since July ( and try to keep up with most everyone ) and I gotta say that everyone here wants to help you get
Shadow regulated and perhaps in remission as well.
And of course, your cat has such a wonderful name. ;-)


Lantus works best when the dose is consistent. It can't do it's job if the dose varies from morning to night or day to day.
And testing is the only feedback you get as to how the lantus is working so you know when it's time to adjust the dose.

I am hoping that you are seeing that your vets suggestions are revealing that he/she doesn't really know Lantus. And many of us here
do, you've got access to years of experience , it's not just a bunch of crazy cat ladies. ( and Carl and John :lol: )
So many vets try to dose with it the same way they have always done with other insulins.

So as you get help, be sure and ask why? Why should I change dose in 0.25 unit increments?
The advisors here will explain anything and everything.
I am hoping you will give it a try.
You've got a good start with having the same dose the last couple of days.....

Thanks for responding. Yes, I did feel torn. I stayed away from the board for the short while that I did once a day dosing because I knew many didn't agree/advised against doing it. I felt I had to try and see what happened. There is something to say about maintaining the relationship with this vet... the practice sees all of our foster dogs and is really great to our rescue group (so, maybe FD isn't their thing...)I've told her no, and done a lot of things she didn't agree with in regards to Shadow.

So, we're back and trying to figure this thing out all over again.

At the end of the day , you hold the syringe and its your life and your cat. All we can do is give input. You take our input, and the vets, and whatever you google, and your own opinions and lifestyle, and the cats behaviour etc and make the decision based on that.

People here are very experieced but since ECID sometimes a different tack,that we dont necessarily agree with, will work! Unfortunately though, it almost always doesnt....

Anyway really though I just dont think you have found the right dose and need to remember that cats do bounce up and down so you need to look at the numbers as a whole.. how many greens do you get? how many pinks and so on. I think with all the dose changes he may have developed a little glucose toxicity and so you might need to go up in dose again (the 2.5 was too much before but it might not be now)

Hi If I haven't already introduced myself, I'm Gobbles' mommy, Kat. Gobbles is an 11 year old male neutered shelter cat who is in FD remission. He's the apple of my eye! He was diagnosed with FD on 11/17/2012 and had his last shot of insulin on 5/16/13; he's been OTJ about 1.5 months now. You are in wonderful hands and we're sure glad to have you here at the Lantus TR support group. Without FDMB, its members, the collective knowledge of all, the support and education I've (and Gobbles!!!) received, I seriously am frightened to think where Gobs and I would be now. I contribute him going into remission by adhering to the Lantus Tight Regulation Protocol. I can't stress enough that Shadow's chances of going into remission will multiply, should you decide to follow it.

Good luck! I'm not on the boards every day, but do stop in at least a few times a week.

Welcome back! Sometimes you just gotta try something...admittedly, it IS hard to take the word of a bunch of "strangers" over the word of your vet. Unfortunately, most vets just don't have enough time to know everything about every animal, so something has to give. We've found, for the most part, treating diabetes is generally not a strong point for most vets. But, fortunately, this group here lives and breaths FD...and we're one big supportive family to boot.

I hope you stick around and ask as many questions as you need to in order to get Shadow where you want him to be. Everyone here is very generous with their time, knowledge, and support.
