Seven years ago yesterday Mitten arrived in my household. She was transported from Chicago via volunteers for the IMOM organization. The young woman had her for many year as a diabetic but no longer wanted to care for her. She was supposedly on 5 units of U twice daily. Mitten was a little wild and I could not test her and she was not eating much so I held off on giving insulin. When she finally did eat, I gave her her "normal" 5 units. She was still too wild to test and I was very afraid of being bitten she she had nipped me already. An hour or so after the shot she was very lethargic so I tested her. My meter read Lo. I gave Kero and then off to the ER. I told the ER vet that her BG was low and she asked how low I just said lower than the meter would read. Mitten stayed overnight and wan on IV w/dextrose and in a warming chamber. The next day Mitten was fine I took her home. Her dose of of U ended up being about 1 3/4 units BID. Mitten has been relatively carefree until about six months ago when I noticed she was losing weight. Her weight has stabilized but I have to give here an appetite stimulate and syringe feed her occasionally.
