Setting for Lancet depth?

My questions right now:

What setting do you all use on the spring lancet? I just tested myself so I'd figure out how this all works before I start on him. I had it set on the deepest but think it was too deep as it hurt! I KNOW if it's set right, it doesn't hurt, my mother showed me that years ago. (Note to self - get thyself to Dr, Squeaky, you're BG is HIGH too).

What if I go THRU the ear instead?

Is the leg vein where vet draws blood ever used?

kinda depends on what device you're using. i for instance use the freestyle device and i've always had it set on the deepest setting. if i accidentally change the setting, i notice it right away because Mousie won't bleed on lower settings.

so you kinda gotta play with it and see what works for your kitty. set it shallower and try it. if you find you aren't getting blood from kitty, deepen the setting and try again, etc....

as far as the leg vein being used, no. not with glucose meters. you can use the paw pads though if the ears give you too much trouble.

anddddddddd, going thru the ear happens to all of us sometimes. hold a piece of cotton or makeup pad or something behind the ear to protect your finger just in case. and it provides back pressure then so as to make sure you are making contact and the ear just isn't being pushed away by the device.
 
We did it!!!!!!!! Well, sort of......ear didn't bleed enough to get testing drop but he was AMAZING! He checked out everything THEN laid down and purred so I could do it! He never flinched and LOVED his fresh wheat tops as a treat. Oh such a WONDERFUL boy! Now if we can just get them to learn to bleed. I DID hit the vein both times!!

it takes a few tries typically for the ears to agree to give up some of that precious fluid :-)

fwiw, don't aim right for the vein but for the space between it and the edge of the ear. if you hit the vein it's not that big of a deal but you don't want to do it too many times, i.e. every day morning and night

when you do get the blood, and especially if you get that vein, make sure to apply pressure afterwards as that will stop the bleeding and help prevent bruising
 
We've had to go to the highest setting for the lancet, but sometimes I can be a bit clumsy and it takes a couple of tries. Good thing my little guy is so forgiving, he takes it all in so well. We use the #30 needle, that seems to work the best. That and a fresh lancet every time, seems to work best for us. Good luck!
