I do not know what to do anymore. Corky as well as my non-diabetic cat Coco have not pooped for more than 4 days, Corky did one poop yesterday one long thin dark poop, but Coco has not for days, I have been alternating from Miralax 1/4 tsp or Lactalose 1ml twice daily, for minimum 7 days, but it's not working, I don't think Coco is feeling well, he is distant and is sort of hiding under the cover in the bedroom today, and feisty, totally unusual for her, they are both eating quite well urinating as usual, they had not been drinking from their bowl since construction and moved their bowl, I make sure to put at least 2 tbsp of water in every meal (4 meals daily) but I am beginning to get really concerned. Any suggestion will be welcomed.

Maria. I am so sorry. I’m very familiar with these constipation struggles. Constipation can be dangerous if it’s let go too long. Are you only doing the Miralax once per day? If so, you need to increase to TWICE per day. Miralax is a “dose to effect” medication, which means that you increase until it works. If they don’t start poop very soon, they may need an enema to get cleaned out before there can be damage the nerves in their colon. You may want to try adding some psyllium husk (plain unflavored Metamucil) to their food also. This would be in addition to the Miralax and the Lactulose. Four days is too long and it’s no wonder they aren’t acting right. I just hope they won’t need enemas at the vet, but if they do then it can really get them pooping again.

I've been doing both the lactulose twice a day and I've increased the Miralax to each meal by today, if they do not poop tonight I will take them to the vet, I just got a deposit for my Income Tax of $256.00 is all I got I hope that will be enough for both of them, I am really worried for Coco it's been too long at least Corky went some yesterday morning. Thanks, Hope you feel better, I am a mess too with my knee. Love ya girl take care I try not to bother so much, but you are the only one that answers my posts.:bighug::bighug::bighug::cat::cat::kiss:

You are NEVER a bother. I would do as you said you have been doing- twice a day with the Miralax as well as the Lactulose until you get normal, regular pooping. If you need to take someone in, it sounds like CoCo first. You’ve got to get her going ASAP.

Mirlax is does to effect. Thus increasing dose to above ¼tsp is acceptable a long there is not a real medical problem for the constipation.

Let me know what happens.
Let me know what happens.

Took them to the Vet, they are dehydrated and very very stressed Xray showed no backed up feces, they wanted to give IV fluids and Vitamin B12 injections, I cannot afford $ 700. he gave me a very thick syringe to give them water4X a day, plus the water I put in food, plus the Lactulose, they are acting really weird, smelling everything , Coco goes around and around the litter box, goes in moves the litter but leaves they are urinating there is no urine infection, I just bought prune organic baby food, 1 tsp per meal , so Corky's number will go up a bit until he poops. I cannot find pumpkin pure is off season, not even Publix I am going to try Amazon

Butternut squash is also an option. My son buys a bag of frozen chunks and purees what is needed for the dog daily with a hand mixer.
Or you could buy a butternut squash, cook it, mash it, then freeze in an ice cube tray.

fyi: I noticed when I defrosted my chest freezer during the last cold spell that all of the pie pumpkin I roasted then froze in the fall is not there. just gone.

thank you for the tip I will go and buy it in a bit, now do I give them the ice cube or wait till it defrosts and put it in the food? I am devastated they still have not pooped today, going on 54 days, the Xrays showed no blockage, I don't get it . I gave them their meal snack with a teaspoon of organic prune baby fruit. thank you:bighug::cat::cat:

Hi Maria. I’m so sorry. That cost is ridiculous. A lot of people on this Board recommend this Beech Nut Squash for the extra fiber for constipation. They say the cats eat it mixed into their food with no problems. Canned pumpkin will also work. The kind that’s just plain pumpkin without added anything.

Edit: sorry you already looked for pumpkin, I see.

Oh, and be very careful when you are syringing water into their mouths. Make sure to go very slowly and to put the tip of the syringe just into the side of their mouths point the tip of the syringe to the side and not toward the back of their mouth— and go slowly giving them a chance to swallow — giving lots of breaks. You must make sure that they don’t inhale any of the water as this could cause pneumonia. Normally, I do not use a huge syringe for this. I get much better control from a small oral syringe like a 3 cc syringe. A large syringe (like a feeding syringe) usually requires a lot more pressure to depress the plunger and risks pushing too much water out all at once. Let me send you a picture of what I am talking about.

How much water did the vet tell you to give via syringe daily?

You ARE the best thank you for the instruction i gave them just one time but I sure did it like you are describing not to wow, and I do have that type of syringe, the one they gave me is not a feeding syringe but it is quite thick ok I am on my way to get the squash took a picture of it, I did buy the organic prune, and gave them 1 tsp with the food at 1:00pm thanks I'll keep you posted, Corky is growling a lot to Coco they both seem very uncomfortable, I guess I would too in their condition

And if all this stuff doesn’t work- or they won’t eat it — remember that you can (for added fiber) give them plain unflavored Metamucil with no sugar. I ended up buying this stuff from Amazon for just under $10. It’s called It’s Just Psyllium. The problem with these squashes are they’re high in carbs, but you will be able to tell if they raise his BG or not. But the most important thing right now is to get them passing stool on a regular basis.

My boy suffers from constipation as well. He gets 1/4th miralax twice a day and cisapride 2mg twice a day too. Sometimes I have to give him an enema, but he's very tolerant so I can do it at home (with vet's approval). He's super picky with foods and won't eat pumpkin or psyllium.

The lactulose at 1ml sounds like too low of a dose. My boy was prescribed this at first at 3ml three times a day. But he hated it so much I couldn't give it anymore, so we switched to the miralax.

I do not know if cisapride need a prescription but I am happy to say that I woke up this morning with 2 different poops in it I could've not been happier apparently the prune organic baby food helped I am buying today the Butter squash to boil and pure it's less carbs or non-better for Corky's BG I will increase the lactulose from tonight on, thank you for your advise. All the members that posted on this mater have been awesome :bighug::bighug::cat::cat:

Cisapride is prescription where I live. Yay for poops! I just realised your lactulose might have a stronger formulation than mine... Ask your vet before increasing the dose just to be safe.

Tosca also struggles with constipation, we had to take her for enemas every few months, until we found a method that works: pumpkin powder for pets, I put every day in her food, and if she is 1 day late with bowel movement I give her right away 1/4 miralax, twice a day. With this method we didn't have to take her for enema anymore. I can relate to the joy of finding the litter box full especially after so much stress!!

My babies have no problem with the Lactulose. they like it I will raise the dose. It's funny you mention enema, because when I took the both to the Vet last week he wanted to keep them for an Iv and enema which required sedation, he said it was going to be $400+ each, now all the effort with all the different things I have tried they are pooping.

Hi Maria, I'm late posting on this post, I haven't been on the board much lately.

I wanted to share with you that my boy Panzer used to have constipation. I was giving him mirilax 2xs a day & that wasn't working so @Suzanne & Darcy suggested trying slippery elm with bark. Once I started giving that no more constipation. I give it to him & my other boy Spook every other day 1/4tsp mixed with 1 tabespoon of water & a spoon full of beechnut beef broth baby food & then he gets Mirilax 1x that day & the day he doesn't get slippery elm, he only gets Mirilax twice that day. So if what your doing now doesn't continue to work, this is another alternative. Hopefully your babies keep pooping for you though!

Got that recipe in my notes buying the balm . I give the Miralax, X2 p/day, Lactulose, 1 1/3ml 3 times a day,beech-nut prune, 1ml X1 in syringe, and the organic pumpkin powder did not work, they pooped last night and Coco the non-diabetic cat did today, when one goes then the other does not, it's working but slowly, the Vets Xrays showed no blocking, so that's good, they were dehydrated some because of all the construction going on in my bldg, people coming in and out all day, I had to move their water bowl that was in the same place since babies, I've moved it everywhere and nothing, I bought a fountain they don't even get near it so I bought this water like Pedialyte, but not at all, 0 everything, I syringe them minimum 4 times a day, they pee quite well, so I'm working on this poop issue on and off, but your recipe is going on I will inform you the results. I guess I can get the elm on line. Thank you so so much :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::cat::cat: I am looking at the balm on line most of it are capsules, but I see one in a jar powder but it has 2 dogs on the label, and another one botanical which one should I order, the botanical looks more for less, at Walmart.com
