Hi everyone, please chime in if you can help! My husband came down this morning to find Red Sonja, our 17 year young 4-legged wonder child in the throes of a seizure and barely breathing...since Sonja has only been diagnosed w/diabetes for less than 6 months we both panicked and did not know what was happening. She had had CKD for over two years and that has always been in the fore front of our minds so we did not think to give syrup or sugar on her gums, we immediately took her to the emergency room where she is right now. She has been SLOWLY responding to fluids and treatment but my last call they said her temperature is still not registering on the thermometer? Her BG was 20 which tells alot but why is she so cold? Any help or input on getting us walked through this would be most appreciated. I have not been able to contact my usual vet yet.

I'm so sorry that Sonja is sick. I'm thinking that the hypoglycemic episode has something to do with her hypothermia. She's at the right place right now where someone can keep an eye on her and keep an eye on her sugar and help getting her temp up. How are her kidney numbers? I hope she gets better soon.

Sandy

Sounds like the blood sugar went to low. When that happens the cat can't control its body temperature that they go into hypothermia. Sounds like the vet is doing all they can.

Do they want her to stay cool to reduce the risk of tissue damage due to low glucose levels?

Do they have her on IV fluids and are the fluids warmed?
Do they have anything - hot water bottle, warming blankets - to help her warm?

{{hugs}}
