Hi. I am having a litle bit of an issue with my vet and I might need to switch vets soon. Does anyone have names of vets in the NY/NJ Metro area?

Thank you!! Mimi & Tommy

Here's a Google search of veterinarians in the Fort Lee, NJ area

If you do it with a more specific city name, or with an address, you will get a more limited list, plus can click on the closer ones first, then look for online opinions.

Have a list of questions you want the vet to be able to answer, such as:

How many diabetic cats do you treat in your practice?
- if 0, next question's answer had better be a yes!

Are you willing to read some current veterinary articles to update your knowledge of contemporary feline diabetes management?
- should say yes

How long do your uncomplicated diabetic cats typically survive - weeks, months, or years?
- you want to see years here; complications such as renal disease may make it only months.

What is the insulin you typically prescribe for diabetic cats?
- this should be Lantus, Levemir, ProZinc, or PZI

What is the usual starting dose?
- this should be 0.5 to 1.0 units

What is the diet you recommend for diabetic cats?
- should recommend low carb, non-prescription foods

If your vet seems out of date, this is common - they have to know a lot about many species and many diseases and it can be difficult to stay current. If you think your vet is open to change, check out this sticky post CONVERT A VET - Abstracts etc. on Home Testing

and share articles such as these

I live in Northern NJ and I go to a vet in Oakland NJ
dont know if that is close by....
I have quite a few vets that I would not recommend you go to also
Where are you looking?

Hi. I live in the Fort Lee area (Bergen county) and work in NYC (upper east side). I am willing to travel some for a good vet.

Thank you!

HEre are some other suggestions:

Upper East Side is where Feline Health - another board member used them not for diabetes, but liked the vets here.

There is also:

Oradell Animal Hospital in Oradell
Maywood Animal Hospital
Cats Exclusive in Ridgefield

I go to vets in Edison and Red Bank NJ - which may be too far South for you.

I go to Raritan Animal Hospital - Edison
Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Red Bank - they also have an office in Hillsborough - not sure if that is close to you or not

And I'm waiting on one more suggestion, will update when I get it.

DOnt go to Oradell Animal hospital!!!
very bad experience and they are so expensive
they charged me 500. for a pepcid for my cat...

I used to go to Maywood when I lived in Bergen County..I do like them...

i am looking for new vet.. I live in North Bergen and have been going to Berginline Animal Hospital.. They are good but they want to leave my cat for 4 days to start her on insulin and i would like another opinion

I personally don't know the vets in your area, as I mentioned in my previous message, I'm in Middlesex County and know the vets here.

I can tell you that leaving your cat with the vet for 4 days, 4 weeks or even 4 hours is just a waste of your money and won't serve any purpose. If the cat was diagnosed with DKA or something else life threatening then, yes leave the cat. But if it is so the vet "can regulate" the cat - then no, don't do it.

Cats aren't regulated in 4 days, weeks or hours. And if the place is not 24/7 operation, then they are injecting insulin in your cat and leaving it alone overnight unsupervised. Anything bad can happen and you really will be upset if it does.

If you can't find someone closer to you and are willing to drive down my way, I'd be happy to suggest Raritan Animal hospital - note they are not 24/7 so don't leave your cat there either.
