Hi,
I wanted to introduce Sebastian, 11, was was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He's been on Lantus for approximately 2 weeks now. We are transitioning to a low-carb diet, canned food. You can see his BG readings in the signature. His curve from Saturday is there as well. I am brand new to this and comments will be appreciated.

(We have another, older cat, who cannot tolerate wet food very well. We've tried Fancy Feast and Friskies, and she gets diarrhea. We are considering Welness Core as an alternative at least for a while.)

Welcome to Lantus Land!

When you have a chance, can you complete a Profile? A profile will give us more background about Sebastian so we don't keep plaguing you with the same questions over and over (e.g., medical history, any medications he's taking, food, meter you're using, etc.). And, could you let us know your first name? Otherwise we'll have to call you "Sneaky."

You're doing great with home testing! I would encourage you to read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the Board, They will familiarize you with the dosing protocol that we use, posting conventions for the Lantus Board, important concepts about Lantus (e.g., shed) and how to use and store this insulin, and the importance of becoming data ready.

With respect to the latter point, Lantus dosing is based on the lowest point of the cycle (the nadir), not on pre-shot numbers. The nadir usually falls somewhere between +5 - +7. As a result, it's important to get at minimum, one spot check during each of the 2 cycles per day. It's very important to get at least a before bed spot check every night since many cats have lower numbers during the evening cycle.

Please visit our condos (our threads -- one condo, per cat, per day) and read our spreadsheets. Ask questions -- it's a great way to learn and we're here to help.

Welcome to LL !

Is Sebastian still getting any dry food? Once you get him switched to all canned his numbers could drop suddenly, so be prepared. The mid cycle BG tests are really important right now. I was feeding that Science Diet food too and it is 28% carbs! As you probably know by now, we aim for under 10% carbs, I try to keep Tess under 5%.

Check out Dr. Lisa's site on cat nutrition. She has some good tips on transitioning, might help w/ your civvie too. http://catinfo.org/#Transitioning_Dry_Food_Addicts_to_Canned_Food_

hello and welcome to FDMB!!
Your older cat may need a slower transition to wet food, and you can purchase some fortiflora (I buy mine on Amazon) which helps regulate the digestive tract whenever there is some... liquipoo going on.

I don't come to the board as much, b/c we're OTJ and I'm busy with school, but I hope you and Sebastian benefit as much as we did from being here.
