Just wanted to let everyone know that Scrumpy's battle with diabetes is over. It was short-lived (about a month) and was apparently secondary to a more serious health condition that did not rear it's ugly head until this past Sunday morning--liver cancer. She was fine up until Sunday morning when she wouldn't eat. She was still drinking and I gave her as much water as she wanted holding the jug while she drank (this was the only way she would drink). We could not get any blood from her ear for testing even after warming and so we held her insulin just in case. By evening she was acting spacey, like she didn't know us, so we gave her the karo in case she was hypo. It didn't do anything. Sat up with her all night and helped her move from place to place and continue to drink from the water jug. We took her to the vet Monday morning and they admitted her for lab work, fluids and antibiotics. I had gone there with the thought she would be euthanized but they seemed hopeful they could get things under control. Her blood sugar was almost 700 and later the vet had her other results which showed white count of 30,000 and renal and liver functions way elevated. She said when they spun the blood, it was yellow. She had never seen a cat jaundiced after 2 days without eating so with further investigation and consult from Scrumpy's primary vet, the diagnosis of liver cancer was made. We went last evening and had our last visit with her, taking her outside and she sniffed deeply of the outside air, lifting her head to take it in. We loved on her and kissed her all up and then held her while she crossed over. We are going to have her cremated and then may keep her with us or set her free at the beach which she loved (all the smells and the sights--she was a different cat there--more alert, excited, like a kitten).
I want to thank everyone for your support, concern and guidance over the last month. This is definitely a great place to find all these things during difficult and joyous times both! Blessings to all!!
