Thanks Tara and Buster for asking the question for me. Scratch was on 1/2 pill of glipizide and 2 units of insulin when he had a mass hypo episode. I was not as prepared as I had wished to be and this was the first episode he has had since he has been on the glip. It took 4 hours to get him back down. I have made my spreadsheet for Scratch for that day up to today. We took him off the glip for now to see if we can get him leveled out, but he is up and down like a yo yo. He has been insulin dependent for over a year and I started doing the bgl testing myself after a vacation. We came home and had to call the vet because he was in hypo and I had no idea what to do. He is now on Grain Free Go canned cat food and went from taking 5 units of prozinc to 2 units with glip (this was what the vet did before I started testing myself). I had not been on a regular testing schedule, but I see now that I really need to be because he is obviously having problems with dosage. He was without episode for 3 months so I thought we were in the clear for now.

Could you please give me your opinion on the spreadsheet numbers. There is noone home during the day so I don't have many numbers besides the pre so far. I have been testing before food, after food/before shot and tonight I will test again, but not sure how long to wait before I test him again. It has been about 1 1/2 hours since he tested over 400.

Thanks!

I'm getting ready to go to work, so can't post much...

Was that 400 last night before or after eating?

It was after eating. He was 311 before eating. Also 3.5 hours after he was at 114.

Hi and welcome to PZI,

Those numbers aren't all that bad, the 409 could have been a spike from the food or Scratch could have seen another low number during the day. Also going from 409 to 117 is a little more than a 70% drop in 3 hours which is a little sooner and more than you would like to see. A good drop would be between 50% to 65% and that should be at his nadir (lowest point) usually between +6 to +8 hours after the shot.

Now that you are testing, I think that I would start over with 1 unit twice a day and see how that works for him, we will be able to start seeing his patterns and can adjust from there.

Good job handling the hypo!

Robin
