Sometimes when Scooter purrs, or if I bump his chest the wrong way during testing, he makes these whooshy honking noises. It almost sounds like congestion but his lungs sound clear, he very rarely sneezes, etc. I am a little bit concerned and wondering if I should keep an eye (or ear) on him for further symptoms of something.

Thanks

I'd check with a vet. Inflammation or tissue growth can narrow an airway; either could need treatment.

it only happens very rarely, like maybe 1-2 times a week, it's just one short little honk when he exhales and then he's done. absolutely zero symptoms of anything other than that. wasnt sure if it was normal for some cats while purring. i can try to get him to the vet later this month next month, money is tight as always right now.... on top of that he needs his dental... sigh

When you have him examined pre-dental, mention it too the vet, in case it is something which would complicate anesthesia.

And if it is asthma, it could cause airway narrowing over time which becomes permanent obstructive pulmonary disease due to chronic inflammation (at least it does in humans). Plus if it flares, it can become a medical emergency; better to have it diagnosed and have meds available for emergency.

I agree that you need to have him checked by a vet. I have a cat, Chloe, who makes honking noises when she is having breathing difficulties due to her heartworms. It is more than just one honk though. But I would get Scooter checked to be safe- when you can.
