Hello my cat Sampson (17 yrs old) has IBD once again. My vet gave a perscription of liquid budesonide (tuna flavored) it smells really awful and I have been putting it in little bit of his food. He wont eat it so I have to add more food and I am not certain at all that he is getting it. He has lost a lot of weight and continues to throw up yellow vomit. Vet gave him a short acting shot of prednisone 2 weeks ago but his blood sugar went up to about 224. He is not on insulin now but I am very concerned about the periodic vomiting and wet stool (all yellow colored). I really need some suggestions on how to give him this budesonide. It smells just awful even the tuna flavored liquid. I have got to get him to gain some weight and I am at a loss as to how to get make sure he eats it. I can't give it to him by mouth, he has vomited really, really bad when I tried that route. Any suggestions PLEASE...

I may just have to insist that the vet give him the prednosine and start insulin again. Really don't want to do that but my guy is wasting away.

Thanks so much.

Awwww, sorry he is having such a problem! When we used Budesonide I had a liquid I gave using an oral syringe, only it was chicken flavored and didn't smell bad at all - Bix seemed to like it actually. Some have gotten it in pill or powder (put in gel-cap) form, but it sounds like pilling may not be an option if he is vomiting. My only thoughts are maybe try a different compound (we used Golden Gate Pharmacy, chicken flavor), or go with the injected steroid like you said, and just give insulin if you need to. Several others around here have used it, so hopefully they will be chiming in soon, maybe someone will have a brilliant idea for you.

Harley is on Budesonide and has been for about 7 months. It is a liquid, oily mixture but chicken flavored. He "loves" it. Actually I mix it with his FF and I don't think he knows the difference. Maybe the tuna flavor is what is turning Sampson off. You could try the oral syringe or get the chicken flavored Budesonide.
