When I first found out Sam was diabetic (and in DKA and possibly not going to make it), my world fell apart a little - I'm sure you understand. Then, when I finally got him home and started trying to understand glucose testing and giving him a shot and learning about diet and everything else that goes with this, I wasn't sure I'd ever get the hang of it. My frustration was immeasurable. Today, we haven't had one reading of "hi" on the meter- in fact, I'm really happy with his numbers today - and I feel like I'm finally getting his bg under control. He seems so much like his old self today, crying at me in the kitchen for food, laying on the floor soaking up the sun, even grooming one of his brothers a little.

I can do this.

You took the words right out of my mouth about how I feel as well. Thank you. We are all going through it TOGETHER!

My cat Nomad was a stray that found me. He had DKA and I had to argue with the vet that I didn't want to put him to slleep. It has been over a year now and Nomad is fairly well regulated on Lantus. Nomad did get increased ketones a couple of times but I caught it before it turned into DKA again. Do you test for keytones also? Unfortunately if your cat has had DKA once they are prone to get it again.
I am glad that your cat is doing so great. Paws up!! :-)

That's one thing I haven't got the hang of yet, although I do have the sticks to do it. I'm not entirely sure how to get a pee sample from a boy cat. He squats down so low!

Well one trick to get a urine sample is to put him and a litter box filled with aquarium gravel rather than kitty litter in a seperate room and wait. It was the only way I figured out how to do it in a houseful of other cats.

But you can do this, and it sounds like you are doing great so far. :thumbup I think we all fell apart when we learned our furry babies were sick with something they couldn't just "get over". And you had the DKA scare on top of it, so you are perfectly normal to fall apart. Been there and done that..lol.

Seriously I adopted my guy Max from this very board as a diabetic after my first FD kitty passed away (not from diabetes). If this was tough to do I certainly wouldn't have volunteered to take on another one. Scary and frustrating you bet at times, but once you get the hang of it all it becomes as natural as breathing. And the bond that you will create between yourself and Sam will be amazing.

Just keep up the good work, and give Sam a couple of chin scritches for me. And if you have questions or just need to vent out some of the frustrations go right ahead.
