Hi folks,

I want to teach a couple of my friends the techniques for testing BG and injecting insulin. Is it possible to buy a solution of sterile saline in vials (or similar) at the pharmacy to demonstrate the syringe-filling and injection techniques? Is this safe to inject like insulin (in tiny amounts, of course -- Boo's on a single unit BID right now), for purposes of practising the technique? What, specifically, would I ask for at the pharmacy?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about in Canada about getting it OTC but I was able to get sterile saline solution from my vet here that they use to teach newly dxed patients to give shots, since I go in and help with not only their newly dxed kitties but Maxwell and I also go to the children's diabetic center here to show testing and shots to kids. It is kind of a "see this kitty is a diabetic too and if he isn't scared of having his blood tested and getting shots you can be brave too" kind of thing. Plus Maxwell has never met a kid he doesn't just love so he makes a great spokescat..lol.

But yes, small amounts are completely safe. Might want to at least ask your vet what you would ask for, what I got from mine just says sterile saline solution on it I think I will have to check when I get home...on my phone right now.

Either a vet dispenses it or I believe you have to have an Rx for it at a local pharmacy in the US.

My vet had me use lactated ringers to learn to shoot at the office. But that was out of a 1000ml bag. Maybe they would have smaller bags they could give/sell you?

Thanks. I've tried a few pharmacies, but no one seems to have it. Not crucial, fortunately; I'll just get my friends to come over around a regular shot time.
