Rupert- diabetic senior kitty with ibd

i started fostering rupert on 9 october for croydon animal samaritans as we have had diabetic cats before. rupert had been in a chalet for 6 months and no one realised he hates other cats... so needs to be homed on his own. we would happily have him but he cant be with our other kitties. rupert has stabilised and put on weight--never happier than when on a lap or killing a catnip mouse or chasing a jingle ball. or eating..... he's on 6 iu x daily of prozinc x2, b12 powder,kitty valium and royal canin gi diet. just wanted to let this forum know about my lovely boy; CAS will cover his costs but he deserves his own humans to boss around and his own home. pix tf

Just an FYI, the Royal Canin food is terribly high in carbohydrates. In all likelihood, Rupert would need less insulin if he were on a lower carb diet. Most of the Royal Canin GI diets are around 16 - 20+% carbohydrate. A diabetic cat should be on a low carb diet (less than 10% and most members here feed their cats in the neighborhood of 5%). With his IBD, novel proteins would be helpful -- rabbit, lamb, and venison are among the novel proteins that are commonly used for IBD cats. I have an IBD kitty and use ZiwiPeak along with a raw diet.
