Hi everyone,

Des goes to the bathroom once a day (usually in the morning) and for the past few days, his stool / poo has been runny (not solid). He puked out hair ball in the morning yesterday. But no puke today.

Des is eating a bit slower than normal, but finishes his food. His butt looks pinkish / a bit irritated. He is eating the same food as usual (no changes).

Steps I've taken:
  1. For the past two days, I've added 1 (one) teaspoon of pumpkin (100% pumpkin and not pie filling) once a day to his dinner. He doesn't like it very much, but finishes his food all the same.
  2. For the past two days, I've added to his food once a day in the morning the Renew Life BoulardiiMax (10 billion active cultures) powder from a capsule. His usual maintenance dose is the tip of a teaspoon, but I doubled the dose this morning and hope it will make a difference.
A couple of questions I have:
  • Should I be giving the pumpkin twice a day (breakfast and dinner)? He does not seem to enjoy the additional pumpkin in his food, and I have to consider the possibility of him not wanting to eat it.
  • How much pumpkin should I administer? And for how long?
  • Should I try giving him pumpkin AFTER he finishes his regular food -- e.g., with baby food? He might be full though...
--
  • Should I increase his dose of S Boulardii from once a day to twice a day with food? If so, how much? And for how long?
--

  • Should I add Slippery Elm Bark (SEB) powder to his diet? He was 13 lbs when he was weighed a few weeks ago at the vet and he is not on any other meds.

  • Given this weight, how much SEB should I give him? And for how long? The NOW brand SEB capsule is what I am planning to purchase, if need be. I will open the capsules to obtain the powder.
--
  • Is it OK to combine pumpkin + S Boulardii + SEB powder in one feeding? Or should I space them out?
--

  • If I am already giving Des the S Boulardii, is it worth trying Fortiflora? If yes, should I give both Boulardii and Fortiflora -- or either is enough?
Thank you for your help.

I'm worried about my baby -- it is really stressful seeing his runny poo every morning... :(

(PS: We are in Canada and might not have access to the types of meds / supplements available in the US.)

Take a look at this information on a very reliable food/IBD website. This is a link to their recommendations for dealing with diarrhea.

Have you made any changes to your cat's diet? Diet changes can throw a cat's system off. Also, it's possible that your cat has a virus. Just like people, cats can get a GI virus that upsets their intestinal tract.

S. boulardii is SO much better than FortiFlora. I wouldn't waste your money on FortiFlora.

Thank you, @Sienne and Gabby (GA) .

I did read the page you recommended, and, given that my cat is not in the litter box frequently (only once a day in the morning), I believe it is a "soft stool" situation and not diarrhea (i.e., going to the box more often than normal).

I didn't see him go poo, however, so I don't know if what he has is "obstipation" (or impacted feces, according to that page).

RE: Fortiflora vs. Boulardii -- Yeah, I've read that S. Boulardii is better, I'll stick to it then.

If the S. boulardii isn't working after a few more days, you may want to get your cat into the vet. If there is an obstruction, you may need the vet to help out with the problem.

The info from what I linked should have dosing information. I would typically start with 1/4 of a capsule once a day and then increase to twice a day. If that wasn't working I'd go to 1/3 of a capsule twice a day. From the website, it looks like you can raise the dose to 1/2 of a capsule twice a day.

OK, thank you!
