Running out of insulin

I can see I will run out of insulin before next batch arrives. What should I watch for? I can't afford buying a box of pens or I would. Also, to start blood sugar testing do you do first test before they eat to begin tracking? A member here very kindly gave me a monitor and I still haven't used it,I have only recently gotten decent, finally, with giving shots.

Yes, you would want to test before he eats/gets his shot. Food should be removed at least two hours before he eats/gets his shot so that your test result is not influenced by food. :) I know testing can seem daunting, but try not to let it intimidate you too much, and trust that any difficulties you may have initially will get easier! :bighug:

How long do you think Mal will need to go without insulin, until the next batch gets there? See if your vet has a partial bottle they will either sell you for cheap or let you use. Lots of vets have partial vials kicking around. Also, you could try posting your general area and seeing if anyone here could help you out with a few doses 'til yours arrives.

Thank you, I will try those options. I think I have one dose left.

Any chance you might add the insulin you're using to your signature, please? It helps us to give you better suggestions when you need help. :)

"He is getting lantus"

However as Mogs suggested, adding this information to your signature makes it easier for members to reply, without having to go back over previous posts. You could also add type of food being fed, other health issues, your name (if you like)..or we can just call you Mal's Mom/Dad ;)

It is lantus. He eats Friskies pate mostly. Seems to have no other health issues. Good weight. I'm Carolyn
Just frustrated with my own screw up here. Vets don't have insulin.

Thanks for th additional information. When you get a chance you can add that to your signature with the other information you have provided.

Your vet can give you a prescription for Lantus pen vials and you can see if any of the pharmacies there will sell you just one pen. You can draw the insulin up from the pen vial the same way you do with the large vial. Since Lantus is a human insulin it should be in stock at most pharmacies.

I looked at my sigature page and couldn't figure out how to edit it I have been using the pens and drawing insulin from those. I am looking into Canada as a source.

If you hold you mouse pointer over your name at the top of this page it will give you a drop down menu.."Signature" is the second item on the left. If you click on this it takes you to the edit page for your signature. When you are finished adding details, you can preview it (if you want) then click save and it will add the extra details. It took me a long time to figure that one out when I first joined

Many of the US member use Mark's Marine Pharmacy in Canada, since the prices are much cheaper than in the US. You would need your vet to either fax a prescription to them or give you a written prescription and you can e-mail a copy to them.

https://rxcanada4less.com/

They are supposed to be very good for shipping quickly, but that will depend on if the temperatures are very cold or very hot. They will be able to tell you whether the temperatures from shipping to destinations will cause a delay.

This link has their Lantus prices:

If you haven't already done so, try calling local pharmacies to see if they will sell a single insulin pen. Call different pharmacies within the same chain, for example, there are two Walmart stores near me, the pharmacy at one of the stores sells single insulin pens, but the pharmacy at the other Walmart does not.
Your vet can call a prescription into the pharmacy.

Thank you, my vet actually got CVS to do it which was so great and saved me $ since I did'nt have to pay for over night shipping!
