Roy's Vet Visit

All I can say is "YAY"!!!!!!!!!

-temp was normal
-no bumps, lumps or masses found
-heartbeat strong and steady
-urine fine
-lungs clear
-blood sugar was purrfect
-a wee bit of arthritis in left leg
-smelly breath cos he has gingivitis
-smelly coat b/c he is grooming himself with an infected mouth
-drooling b/c of gingivitis
-a 1.5 lb. loss was noted and Vet says prolly due to the fact that Roy's mouth was too sore to eat
-antibiotic shot given
-Vet noticed that one eye is stating ever so slightly to cloud over

10 hours later and Roy has eaten 1/2 can of FF !!!

Not bad for a cat entering his 20th year.

WOW! What goooood news Mr. Roy ~ you go boy...young man!

Ya...I was just looking at the invoice from the Vet and there it is:

Covenia -14 Day Antibiotic inj 0.500ml @ $54.34

I had discussed getting Roy's teeth cleaned awhile ago, but my feeling was, and still is, is that he is just too damn old for any type of anaesthesia. I have had so many friends who have lost their cats due to anaesthesia. Maybe if my 4 terrorists were younger I might consider getting heir teeth cleaned....that's a big might and I am aware that there is a school of thought that correlates bad teeth in cats with health problems down the road. I am also sure advances in cat dentistry and anaesthesia have been made since my 4 were itty bitty kitties. However, they are all over 15 years old now and I really can't see any reason for them to go through that at their age. Mags has really good teeth and I often wonder if it is because he received more calcium than the other cats. Ever since he was a wee thing, every time I made coffee/tea he was right there getting some coffee cream...not a lot mind you, about a 3-inch diameter wet spot of it on a plate.

As of this writing, Roy seems perky, he ate a good breakfast, had a nap and is now watching the birds at the feeders outside my bedroom window (and making that weird cat noise).

I wasn't aware about that Covenia stuffz and I shall be sure to keep an eagle eye on Roy.

It makes me wonder if Vets ever read any of these articles and I am going to forward this to mine. - Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I understand the concern about anesthesia. I too have a cat that has had dentals and after her last one, I decided she is too fragile to go through it again. There are options to treat a cat without a dental and it includes antibiotic regiments (such as clindamycin) like two weeks on then off, then on, and you may want to try brushing the cat's teeth yourself. While it won't fix the existing problems, it will help prevent it from getting worse.

I didn't mean to upset or alarm you about the covenia, but thanks to this board and Dr. Lisa (a long time vet poster here) she's made me aware of it and I just want to pass the information along, so we are all better informed cat owners.

I'm glad Roy had a good day and hopefully this will continue for a very long time
