Hey guys just tested Roxy (starting day 6 having dropped down to 1 unit) and this is the lowest AMPS yet! I gave her the insulin and she's eating FF pate. Should I give her anything more HC right now or wait and test in 30 mins? I imagine she will drop a bit first before heading up? We've had low numbers a few times and she's never displayed any hypo signs.

Lantus does not onset until +2 or +3, she might stay flat for the next hour or two with a food bump from the low carb food. Feed her medium carb if you have at the next test. Test at least every hour if you can until she starts going up.

Yep. Just tested 45 mins after AMPS and she's up a little at 3.8 (68) so will test again in an hour.

Just tested at +2 and she's down a bit again so I have just given her just a tablespoon of a higher carb wet food (FF Tuscany collection). Will test again in an hour

Ok. Given meter variance she's just flat so she is safe. Please update your thread title with Roxy's US numbers. I'm helping other cats right now and it helps me and others to see your progress at a glance.

Don't forget, Deb, that you can't really relax until two hours after food. You need to make sure she is coming up on her own without a food influence so prepare to be up tonight.

Deb -- You're doing great and getting excellent guidance from Katherine. Keep testing so you have the data and know how Roxy is responding to your shooting low.

@Summer and Susie -

This is not good information. In fact, I'm not sure it even makes sense. Two hours after a cat has been fed, the effects of the food are wearing off and Lantus onset may have begun. I seriously doubt that you looked at Roxy's SS. Not all cats experience onset at +2 and not all cats have their nadir at +6. Onset and nadir can be early and nadirs can shift. This is also the lowest that Deb has shot. Please do not offer suggestions that could be dangerous.

Just tested at +3 and insulin kicking in: down to 2.7. Have just given her another tablespoon of higher carb food (Fancy Feast Tuscany collection) and a dab of maple syrup on her paw. Will test again at +4 and watch her.

I have always read, on this site, that you should wait two hours after food to know that your kitty is going up on its own before you can stop testing. Excuse me but I am getting conflicting information here. I guess I will butt out.

I didn't mean to jinx you! I'm in the same boat today...started low and after a teeny lift continued down. Keeping us working hard to keep them surfing on our supposed day of rest!!

@Summer and Susie - That refers to not feeding after +10. You don't feed 2 hours prior to shot time so your PS number isn't influenced by food. If you are steering the cycle due to low numbers, there isn't really a time frame involved. You are conflating different pieces of information. If you want to discuss this further, send me a PM. I don't want to hijack Roxy's thread.

Deb -
Re-test in 30 min. I wouldn't wait an hour.

This is from the handling low numbers sticky:
If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)
  • Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
  • Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
  • Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
  • Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
  • Test in an hour and follow the same steps.
DO NOT become complacent. If numbers have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wear off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep or leave the house. You are putting your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out.

yes I am just going by her previous behaviour, she doesn't seem to move much until at last 40 minutes after last test and starts getting really antsy after 2 or 3 tests close together to the point that she gets uncooperative. Just tested again and we have a little rise (though I understand this is still effectively flat), I am watching her closely and will test again at 12 - in 45 mins unless her behaviour worries me. I gave her a little more gravy and a little more FF tuscany.

Roxy has been asleep most of afternoon, not asking for food. Just gave her another test (77 / 4.3) at +9.5 and a small pate snack pot to make sure she's not starving before dinner as I won't be able to give her anything after 5pm.
