Rousseau's First Home Blood Test

I did a blood test on Rousseau this morning at 10:00. I have the Bayer Breeze 2 meter. His BG was 495; I was hoping it would be lower. I had not given him his insulin shot yet but gave him 2 units after the test. He ate breakfast around 9:30am. I can't believe the test process went so well the first time. HIs ear produced plenty of blood. I warmed it using a heated 'rice sock' as suggested on this site. Watching the video and reading other descriptions from FDMB helped immensely; I would not have known how to do it otherwise.

Has anyone used the Bayer Breeze 2 meter and know how it's numbers compare to others? Also, I don't really know how to adjust how much insulin to give him based on his BG readings other than knowing he needs insulin if it's really high and doesn't if it's really low.

There is so much to learn. Did he eat before his test? It looks like it might have only been 30 minutes which may not make too much difference - it may not have been working in his body yet. (In a new diabetic, food raises bg levels. So we want to get a test without food influencing the numbers - ideally 2 hours after they eat or before they eat. )

Even if the food brought his numbers up a little, 2 units should be okay. For your peace of mind, plan a test about 4 hours after the shot and then 6 hours after. That will tell us how the insulin is working.

The next hurdle for us to nag about is the spreadsheet. If you notice, lots of people have them attached to their posts and it tells us right away what dose he is on and what his numbers are. Helps you and us determine how things aare going. If you want help, just send me a pm. You are doing so great. I remember your first post when you were worried about giving the shot. Look how far you have come - so fast!
 
Thanks! :-) I found the spreadsheet but I don't quite understand it. What do these stand for: PMPS, AMPS, U? Also what are the + numbers? I will do more tests today.
 
Amps=morning preshot number pmps= evening preshot number. U= units of insulin given +3 is 3 hours after the shot, +6 is 6 hours, etc.
 
I just did another blood test (14:20pm)and got a reading of 10. How can that be?! I gave him some tuna afterward because I read that sugarcats should eat if the BG is really low.

I gave him some tuna at 12:40pm today too. I tried to do blood tests earlier but had no luck. I obviously lucked out on the first one I did. I've had a harder time since.
 
OK, that 10 has got to be a bad test number, like there was something wrong with the strip... You would need to test again when you see a number that makes no logical sense. Can you try that?

Are you sure it didn't say "lO" as in "low" where what looks like a one isn't actually a "L"?

It's mg/dL, not metric. I double checked and it looks like a 10 not LO. I just tried to do another test on him but didn't get enough blood so I couldn't get a BG, got an error message instead. He's really tired of getting his ears pricked. I've tried both ears. I'll try again in a couple hours but I"m keeping my eye on him.

If he is low, this could be a dangerous situation. Try the meter on you to see if it is reading right. If he were mine, I would just take another test. If he is really LO, you should intervene now with syrup. If he is not, you don't want to throw that into the equation.
 
I tested him again and this time it was 300. I feel much better now. Whew!! Thank you so much.

Any time you see a low number (and you are not sure how it could be so low especially) do exactly what you did....post here. If he ever shows symptoms that would make you think he's have a hypo episode, post here and put a 911 icon on the subject (you'll see the buttons right above the window you are typing on.) That will get our attention. Try to stay close to kitty and the computer so that you can see what we tell you that you need to do. Have your vet's phone number or ER number where you can get it quickly, or put it on your cell phone.
If Kitty goes Hypoglycemic, it is an emergency, and you will need to think and act quick. It doesn't happen often, but understand that it can. I've seen a few of them since I've been here, and that's not too long. Others have seen more of them. If you haven't already, read the "sticky" thread called "....Hypos - they can kill" on the top of the index page for this forum.

Thanks Carl. I read and printed out the "How to Treat Hypos..." I also have my vet's number and emergency vet's address and phone # with that article on the refrigerator, just in case. I did that last weekend.

I couldn't get a blood test from him this morning. I tried 3 times but his ears didn't produce any blood. It went so well the first time too, frustrating.
