Room temperature v. refrigerated food

I often see articles mentioning it's best to feed cat food at room temperature, never refrigerated. Any particular reason? I've never had this explained to me. I've been feeding cats refrigerated food since the 1970's. No complaints yet!

BTW, Andy seems to enjoy being an "only cat" since his brother's passing last month. I don't think he's noticed anything different!

I know what you mean. My Maggie seemed to be happy when her brother Max didn't come home again. I was upset at first, then realized that she didn't have to fight for food or attention anymore. I do know some kitties seem to mourn, but Maggie didn't at all.
 
Not sure if this is a common occurrence or not, but the cat I had as a kid had problems with refrigerated food.

Tiger didn't have problems when he was younger, but as he got older, if we refrigerated the remaining 1/2 can of food and then fed it to him while it was still cold, he would vomit all of it back up. So we experimented with just leaving the leftovers out on the counter (with a lid on it, of course) and he stopped getting sick after eating.
 
Also, refrigerated food isn't as soft as the food at room temperature (that really isn't a good way to explain it, but it's the best I've got right now!), and so the texture seems a bit different to the cat. Between it not smelling exactly right and the texture not being exactly right, some cats won't eat refrigerated food. It really depends on the cat...B.K. knows what he wants when he wants it, and if his Mom guesses the wrong flavor (or the wrong texture), he won't eat it. Chester on the other hand...well, let's just say Chester hasn't met many bowls of food he didn't like! :mrgreen:
 
Same here, has to be room temperature.
One kitty will toss cold food, and the other won't touch it.

Since I go thru two cans a day for both, properly stored in a sealed container, there is no risk of the wet food going bad cuz it gets used up fast.
Room temperature or slightly warmed food is also more appealing to most kitties.
 
The only food I refrigerate is the raw food. Canned food is always out, even if it is opened (and covered). Yes, I think it is a preference thing for the cat, and mine have always preferred room temp.
 
If I take it off the shelf, I give it at room temp. But if it's from an opened can in the fridge, I mix in a bit of water, mash it up good, and give it about 9 seconds in the microwave. It's not warm, but not cold either. Just takes the edge off. Plus watching this whole ritual gets him excited and ready to chow down.
