Yesterday was our monthly check-up at the vet. They did a blood draw for a fructosamine level and a spot-check on his blood glucose. The blood glucose came back a 70 (about 2.5 hours after eating and his 3units of Lantus). His fructosamine level came back today -- 319. Anything under 500 at this lab is normal. Less than a month ago he tested 509. At that point we switched him and his sisters completely off dry food. An exclusively wet diet (and less insulin than he had been getting before) have him at this level.

Now, we're watching his hind legs get better - the B-12 seems to really be helping with his neuropathy. And as soon as we get two back-to-back negatives on the GlucoseStrips in the litter box, he'll drop another unit.

In other news, I had my vet double-check my meter (the Target up-and-up one) against theirs yesterday. When they got 70, mine got 54. I'm really concerned, because I'd been using my meter and now I'm thinking my meter is full of fail :( Is it normal to get some weird results? Should I just switch to yet another different meter?

BUT! I wanted to let you guys know - the vet says she's never seen a cat rebound so quickly as he has been with just the diet change, and is really confident we'll be able to get him to be just completely diet-controlled in no time! So if you've got a diabetic cat - I'd tell you to ditch the dry food and go 100% wet in a heart beat.

All meters have a =/- of 20% so the number your vet got and the one you got are basically the same number.

54 + 20% = 64
74 - 20% = 59

Also if your vet was using a pet only meter and you are using a human meter, human meters tend to read slightly lower than those caliberate for cats. But your meter is close enough for what we use them for which is to watch for trends, and to know when they are dropping too fast or too far down.

I didn't know that there could be such a difference! Especially when I've had them test my meter against theirs and it's been within 5 points, so that's good news. Thanks for the head's up!

BTW, we've had 2 negative days in a row, and Romeo's down to 2units of Lantis 2x a day!
