Hi everyone,
Rocky had diabetes in August 2018, but it went away (transient) in Sept 2018. It has returned this fall with numbers bouncing all over the place. I noticed in October that he was drinking so much water, shaking his bowl and pulling it across the floor, and peeing a LOT. He was always hungry, as well, and begging for more food even when he had just eaten. Took him to the vet after testing him at home (and he was upper 300's on each home test with AlphaTrack2) and he was 433 at the vet. Fructosamine blood work was also in the low 400's. So, he's back on ProZinc, 1 unit 2x a day, but I have been testing pre-shot. I also filled out the spreadsheet, but just did it retroactively based on data I had thrown into a note in my phone, so it's not a perfect-looking spreadsheet. Sorry. The vet asked me to do a 12-hour curve at home this weekend if possible. Otherwise, they'll run another fructosamine. I am running out of strips, though, and don't have enough for a curve. Are there any strips that are usable in the AlphaTrack2 that I can get at a local pharmacy? My last 'refill' was with PetSure strips rather than AlphaTrack strips, but it'll take a few days for those from Amazon.

His sugar numbers are bouncing around b/c he's been so sick with his IBD and possible SCL. We started chlorambucil in October and his diarrhea is finally under control. That's the first time in 4 1/2 years that he has not had diarrhea several times a day. However, he's gone from 17-20 pounds (high of 24 lbs in 2018!) down to 10 1/2 pounds now. He's still running, jumping, playing, but it's clear that he has a lot of pain at certain times. He's on bupernorphrine as needed for pain. He's also on gabipentin for pain.

Other health issues: Heart valve disease, mild HCM, severe arthritis in back legs and C-spine, IBD/possible SCL, short colon, chronic pancreatitis, formerly obese but now has had rapid weight loss and is 1/2 the size he used to be.

ALL MEDS:
  • Chlorambucil 1.75 every 4 days.
  • Bupernorphrine as needed for pain
  • Flagyl 2x a day
  • Budesonide 1x a day
  • VisBiome Vet probiotics
  • ProZinc 1 unit 2x a day if needed
  • Psyllium Husk Powder for diarrhea - I fill empty gel caps with this and give 2x a day
  • Cerenia 8mg a day for nausea and vomiting
  • Gabipentin for pain

I am not sure about which strips can be used for the Alpha Track. Most people here use human meters. Apparently, you can get a meter at Walmart in the US for $9 and strips for $17.99. Though I am not sure how your vet feels about getting curve data from a human meter.

We really don't recommend using another brand of strips in the AlphaTrack. There's no guarantee on the accuracy. There's a discussion of this topic on the Think Tank forum.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a back up meter for just the reason you're running into -- AT strips are only available online and if you're running out, you're stuck. FDMB has been around for 25 years -- there was not an abundance of pet meters and it's been only recently that vets are recommending pet-specific meter. The majority of the members here use a human meter. The strips are not only more widely available, they cost a heck of a lot less.

I AM IN SHOCK!!! I switched to PETSURE TEST strips 1 year ago..very good readings..still compare with AlphaTrak =very little difference ..went to buy my usual order from Ebay ..$44.00 /3 pack NOW 129.00???I checked everywhere..Amazon, Full Circle....Either not available or the very huge price increase..Something not right? Does anyone know what's going on???

Called economics: Supply and demand. Supply is short so price goes up.

Thanks for your response..BUT something is going on. I still get Alphatrak but only as a confirmation of the accuracy of PETSURE. I have read many complaints re: Petsure accuracy. However, after 6 years, I would not take a chance the petsure strips were not very reliable. I also liked InsulinX . Insulinx price quadrupled a while back and not very available. I have boxes of Freestyle lite but don't use them= not as accurate. Other brand's prices seem the same..I don't know what to do other than return to full time use of AlphaTrak strips...so expensive. BTW..Elliott has been in remission since using Lantus for only 4 months 4 years ago... I am using the test on Suzie (my dog) who has been diabetic for 5 years...I am not comfortable using Relion but maybe will have to use Freestyle lite and Alphatrak..Again, thanks everyone for helping me with Elliott years ago..He is fine!!! Have a great holiday everyone!!!
