Rippling skin when petting

I've tried to remember/find the previous discussions about rippling skin when petting down a cat's back but can't find it. Dakota's started it and is getting worse about it. The last couple of days he acts like it either hurts or REALLY bothers him - he turns his head warning me he's going to bite. He's declawed so doesn't slap, biting is his defense. (Was this way when we adopted him).

Can someone help me remember what this is please?
 
Minimize stimulation to help him cope. The minute he starts reacting, you stop touching.
 
@BJM - thank you! Yes, we've stopped touching when he reacts but it's gotten worse the last 2 days...I can't tell if it's annoying or something that's painful. Timing is associated with both lower numbers (finally) and sick, coughing droolers.

Reading the link on hyperesthesia - that doesn't seem to fit...
 
Other options might include something neurological, or a chemical imbalance. A vet check may be helpful. Documenting what, when, how long and how often may help the vet determine likely causes.
 
Kidney failure results in the build up of toxins in the blood (uremia) and can cause electrolyte imbalances. If I recall correctly, in humans, it may result in itching.

Was following this with interest, as my civvie Minka does the rippling thing when I am giving her sub-q fluids. The article didn't fit with her, though, either. I'll have to remember to ask her Oncologist about it.
