Everyday Riley's numbers keep getting better and better. Yesterday morning (without insulin the night before) his numbers were 250 and at .5 dose it brought him down 100 points in 3+ hours. lastnight too low to shoot around 160. This a.m. I was expecting his numbers to be in 200 again and was gonna try .25 BUT they were in 150 area.

So they just keep dropping. I pray his body is healing. I know his infection is clearing up that steriod is wearing off and HIS DIET HAS DRASTICALLY CHANGED. 90% soft low carb food.

I will have my husband check at 2 hours to see how his food has effected him. Do we still moniter every couple hours when he doesn't get insulin?

So he didn't have a shot last night or this morning, correct? With no insulin in his system, hypo isn't a concern. Riley is certainly taking you for a wild ride! I'll be interested to see how his numbers are tonight.

Whoo Hoo! So he went down after eating, not up? That means his pancreas is waking up. It isn't a done deal; his pancreas can take a rest now and then,

So we consider a cat in remission if they range from 40-120 off insulin for two weeks. You can start the count down. But don't get discouraged if he needs a drop now and then. It's a process and different for every cat.

He went back to 150 when Ray checked him at lunchtime.. I just dropped off a lot of info at my vets office (of what I've been up to) so I'm hoping he calls me and we can figure what the next move is. Does he need some form of insulin for 150?

This is a hard part. You need to decide the lowest number you are comfortable shooting. For aome people it's 180; for some 150. And be sure you are home the first time you try it. I'd suggest a drop under 200. Literally a drop - you pull up a dose that is easy to measure, maybe .5? Then count out the drops until it is gone. When you want to give a drop, pull up the .5 and let out all the drops but one.

Sue, I assume this would work with any insulin? How hard is it to let the drops out one by one? And I assume a drop is less that .1 u?

Just spoke with the vet and he said I just graduated to a whole new level of pet parenting and he may be calling me for questions.:) He was very impressed with what I've accomplished in such a short amount of time.

I printed out the Prozinc protocol that Sue has and gave it to him, along with a print out of Rileys SS. I also wrote him a letter about my experience with FDMB and how I thought you'all were Angels from God and asked him to please tell all his FD patients about it. He was very pleased with everything.

We also discussed Budesonide as the choice of steroid. He said that was most likley the best for diabetes and IBD. He wants to try to hold off on that if we can and see how Riley does once the Depo wears off.

He was a bit concerned with Friskies and Fancy Feast because it wasn't the best quality food for IBD and he said it has alot of dyes in it thats a concern for future problems. He recommended the Hill canned RX diet and agrees with high protien although I do remember seeing that on the higher carb under wet canned so I'm not sure if I'm going that route yet. I still have some investigating to do.

Riley was at 134 when I came home. :cat:

Thanks Sue,that was a lot of great information I'm going to have to reread later.

I counted about 4 medium size drops from point .5 units. Dr. Todd wants me to still give him points .5 units daily but I'm not going to do that because I saw what it did to him yesterday afternoon when it brought him down a hundred points from 250 within 3 hours. So I'm going to stick with one drop if its 150.

Be sure to give your vet the link to Dr Pierson's web site Cat Info.
If you're not using the U-100 syringes with the ProZinc, show your vet the conversion table we have, and a reference syringe marked with the dose. With a little bit of luck, he'll understand it.

... And if not, here's the explanation:
U-100 insulin has 100 units per milliliter (mL).
U-40 insulin has 40 units per mL; it is 40% as strong as a U-100 insulin.
To adjust U-100 syringe markings when measuring a U-40 insulin, you multiply them by 0.4.
0.5 * 0.4 = 0.2
1.0 * 0.4 = 0.4
1.5 * 0.4 = 0.6
2.0 * 0.4 = 0.8
2.5 * 0.4 = 1.0
