Rice in Friskies Pate Canned Foods?

Hi, Everyone ~

I feel dumb, but have the Friskies pate type canned foods always contained rice? When our cat Willie was still with us and had steroid-induced diabetes a few years ago, I can remember reading all food can labels like crazy. And, of course, referring often to our wonderful Janet & Binky's food charts.

Anyway, we now have a new diabetic cat, Butters, to take care of, so I'm wondering if the Friskies pate canned foods are still a good choice? We're using the Fancy Feast Classics too, but with six cats, we do have to watch our budget.

Thanks for any help/advice you can give.

I believe they have--if I remember correctly that was why I fed FF to Bandit in the beginning. He's super carb sensitive so I can't feed him anything with grains.

Have you tried Special Kitty Turkey & Giblets?? It doesn't have any grain in it and it's about the same price as Friskies. If you don't have a walmart, I think the 9-Lives ground canned food is grain free, too.

But I don't think I'd bother changing it unless Butters is sensitive to grains like Bandit. Some diabetics can eat small amounts of rice and be fine as long as the food is under 10% carbs, and some it will shoot their BG up.

Personally, I don't trust the amount of rice in the formula can't gradually creep up and up, which is why I avoid anything with grains period.

Hi, Julia & Bandit ~

Thanks for the info on Special Kitty Turkey & Giblets, Julia. I'll definitely go to Walmart and stock up. Any other Special Kitty varieties that you'd recommend while I'm there? I need to take a look at the chart on this board showing food ingredients...what a helpful resource.

"Personally, I don't trust the amount of rice in the formula can't gradually creep up and up, which is why I avoid anything with grains period." -- I agree. I want all six of our cats to be on a low carb, grain free diet.

Thanks again, Julia, for answering. Guess I'm pretty nervous about starting over with diabetes in a new cat.

Hi, Bruce & Simon ~

Thanks for the info on the SophistiCat line at Petsmart, Bruce. I was planning to go to Petsmart next week, so I'll certainly pick up some cans of SophistiCat to try.

Oh, Bruce, your lovely Simon reminds me so much of our cat Willie. She was the sweetest, gentlest cat. We lost her at age 17 in 2009, and I still miss her so very much.

Thanks again,
Eva

I've not fed the Special Kitty before, but what you can do is check the 9 Lives and Special Kitty flavors out on Janet & Binky's list, find the ones that are below 8% carbs, and then check out the ingredients on the cans when you go to the store. Stay away from the fish flavors of special kitty because they have soy and wheat in them, but there are a few other entrees that are grain free---I just can't remember what they are off the top of my head. Sophistacat is a better quality food than the other two because the main ingredient for many flavors is muscle meat instead of byproducts, but it's in the same price range as Fancy Feast--48 vs 55 cents a 3oz can I believe?

If you have a lot of cats, one thing that works out to be slightly less than Fancy Feast for a higher quality food if you get it in the big 13oz cans is EVO. The Beef and Chicken & Turkey 95% flavors are only 1.75 a 13 oz can at my local independent pet food store. (13 cents per oz vs 18 cents per oz for FF). Plus, it's higher in calories so you don't need to feed as much. Bandit eats 7.5 oz of Fancy Feast per day, but he only needs 6oz or less of the EVO 95%.

Here's a link to their website--they have a store finder so you can find out where they sell it close to you: http://wtb.naturapet.com/

Hi, Julia ~

All of our cats like canned EVO 95%, but I didn't know it came in larger cans. Will definitely supplement their other canned foods with EVO. Thanks for the info, Julia.

Darn trifocals...I'll need to take along a magnifying glass to read the ingredients on the can labels  .
