Hello all, I was active many years ago when I had my diabetic cat, Toby (who went on to develop hyperthyroidism, too). When we lost him, it was quite sudden, and I kept putting off writing it down, so I just... disappeared. I fondly remember this board, however, and the wonderful, generous people who populated it.
And I have another kitty who has now been diagnosed, too. He was a rescue, estimated to be anywhere between about 16 and 18 years old now, and his name is Gus.
Gus has had IBD for as long as I've had him (diagnosed by elimination while in rescue), and it's been well controlled for the last decade by a raw food diet. In recent months, he lost a lot of weight, so had blood tests, which came back... fine. It does look like the blood of an old boy, but there wasn't anything severe enough to warrant the weight loss in my vet's opinion, and the suggestion was IBD was a bit harder on his older body and we should try steroids. After some back and forth, we did, and he tolerated it well and put a little weight on.
Then, 5 weeks in, at the end of August, we had an emergency vet trip for a UTI (he has no history of urinary issues). When the vet dipped his urine, she found glucose, and pricked his ear - 21.2.
After much back and forth, he had his fructosamine test, and it came in at 355. He's also been prescribed another week of antibiotics, because UTI symptoms reoccured around 24 hours after his last tablet. I'm weaning him off the prednisolone.
My vet has been in touch with the company to verify he's a candidate, and I've been offered Senvelgo. Insulin is an option, but not the vet's first choice. She's also suggested we can continue the weaning and see if the problem goes AWAY, that it might be purely steroid-induced. That first set of tests, where nothing was really wrong, did show a glucose of 8.1, with 8.2 being the cut-off, it turns out, so I'm not totally convinced.
So, here I am, deciding what to do, and saying hello again
