I don't now why I didn't think of this sooner. He's constipated. He's been lethargic all day and now I've seen him try and poop 3 times and can't - I thought he might be having an issue so I gave him some lactulouse earlier (despite what it might or might not do to his BG) we went out and came home to throw up on the floor (his dinner all watery) and he's in and out of the box. I'm trying to get our vet - I just cannot afford the ER Vet who is always NOT good with enemas for him. Wishing I knew how to give him one myself - I'd try it if I had any clue. He's miserable- it's Memorial day weekend and everyone is nuts out here where we live - driving like lunatics and the ER Vet is like an hour away - in best circumstance. I'm just terrified. Any thoughts?

I know Miralax is good, but not sure how fast it works. And the other issue, Ellen, is that if he has an obstruction, giving him something could make it worse. I wouldn't consider giving him an enema or suppositories.

I think you have some pretty good experience with this. What are you thinking?

I'm thinking I'm screwed and will end up driving an hour with him getting all freaked out and not breathing well by the time we get there and then they are all focused on his breathing which is not the issue. I did hear from our Vet who's out of state but he gave me the number of a vet who says she can be here some time tonight to help us - she's at an emergency about 45 minutes away. Waiting to hear from her - he needs an enema and some sub q. fluids tonight so please keep fingers crossed his BG is high 200's so that's not a major issue even though he threw up.

This is scary, Ellen. So sorry you are in this situation. No brilliant ideas here. Just hope you can get to a vet and get him set. Be forceful about the constipation being the issue. They are being paid to do what you and Robbie need. You'll be his advocate.

Fingers and paws crossed here.

damn, Robbie keeps having problems I have never had to deal with! Bob is very "anal expressive" and hasn't suffered from constipation.
Do you have fluids at home?
I'll be on looking for updates...

have never given sub q fluids and don't have anything for that. All local drug type stores are closed. Waiting on a house call Vet who says she might be able to make it here- he's actually kind of "leaking" from his rear - which is NOT what normally happens in this case. Worried about obstruction - but our Vet didn't think so - he just saw Robbie last week and said he felt very empty and he's gone since than just NOT a lot - I was lax - should have been more pro-active. Once again kicking myself - just been so pre-occupied by work didn't notice he wan't going as well as normal.
thanks gang

This is a subject I know oh so well. Once they are blocked it's hard for them to become unblocked by their self. The Miralax generally won't help at that point.
Baxter had the manual clean out without a enima. The vet basically lubed up his gloves & started digging it out. It was very tramatic for me to watch.....not mention for Baxter to. I don't ever want to go through that again. He now gets 1/4tsp 2x daily mixed with water into his food. Baxter was really bad he was throwing up & really couldn't walk without stopping & straining.
One member Kathy who has Kitten she did manual clean outs on the other cat. I wouldn't recommend doing it on your own if you haven't had a vet show you how because you can make it worse.

Just keep a eye on him. I would get him to the vet tomorrow.

Hope Robbie feels better soon.

Ellen,
Just like the rest of us....you're human. You can only do so much, and work, play, Robbie...it all has to fit into 24 hours a day. DO NOT beat yourself up about this. You're actually doing a pretty good job of juggling things, so give yourself SOME credit, ok?

Sub-q fluids aren't hard. It's just something new you'll learn. The needles are scary looking, because they look huge compared to syringe needles. We call them "harpoons". I think the treatments for Bob bothered me more than him. I had to do 100ml treatments on him about 35-40 times.
The leaking thing sounds odd. Maybe there's just one small lump holding up the works, and if she can get that out of the way... Robbie might clear the room!

This is so scary and on a holiday weekend.
By any chance do you have any pediatric suppostorries?
I had a Manx cat that had a genetic defect of the spine that frequently got constipated and he did have to go in for enemas about every month or two but my vet said I could try to use the suppostory with him. If you try one, only use the kind for babies, not the adult ones. Don't force it; only needs to go a little ways, it will start to melt quick.
I usually had some results with them, if nothing else it starts things moving towards the end if hes been blocked up it can get hard and dry and they will sometimes avoid going if its hurting when they strain.
Sending out prayers for Robbie, hope he will feel better and go soon.
After he gets straightened out I would try the Miralax and add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin to his food daily, both helped my Manx, Casey to keep from getting constipated as often.

Thank you thank you all - Jenn I couldn't remember who was the person I was thinking who had these issues often - and it was BAXTER! oh, boy... Well the house call Vet just left - she was a DOLL - really wonderful was here about an hour - she didn't have the kind of enema that our vet normally gives - just didn't have it on her but she gave him warm water with some soap and LOTS of lube into him - she could feel like a LONG cigar of pretty hard poop not near the end but further up which was not good - she didn't not want to attempt to break it up herself said it was too far up and she'd hurt him without him being sedated - so we did 3 of the water, lube and soap enemas and with each one a few decent nuggets came out of him -enough that she felt confident he's OK till the morning and might even go more - she gave him sub q. fluids too and you're right Carl would scare the Sh$% out of me - but didn't out of Robbie ha ha- he was SUCH a good boy the Vet was very impressed. She was so wonderful - even our own Vet said when he heard she was coming over "oh, you are in excellent hands" He's thrown up after each attempt to go but she said while not great that's normal - from the strain of pushing. She said there is absolutely NO reason I can't give him the lactulouse daily - that the sugar in it doesn't get absorbed and won't effect his BG at all - GET THIS - she's was THRILLED I home test - said she's familiar with this forum and others and has lots of clients who are on here and others - I have to tell you I loved this woman. She works in Manhattan but comes out to the Hamptons where we are in the summer.
So now I'll probably be up and down checking on him all night - lots of mess around the house right now so I'm going off to clean it up best I can.
Thank you all for the input and support - it means a lot

Very good update! Sounds like an awesome vet. ;-)
