Hello,
Minnow was diagnosed in early Feb 2023 and went into ‘remission’ in late Feb. he was on Lantus. He’s been off insulin since then with measurements between 110-160. I think he was more diet regulated than in remission, nevertheless, my vet recommended to stay off insulin as long as he was below the renal threshold. There was no sugar in his urine at this time.
Minnow has long standing IBS and chronic constipation. He ate a prescription high fibre kibble for years that managed the constipation effectively. It’s 35% carbs. When he was diagnosed with diabetes I switched to low carb wet food. This has, quite unfortunately, aggravated the IBS and he’s been suffering from severe constipation again. I’ve tried everything. Low residue wet food trial, different foods and proteins, adding psyllium, adding copious amounts of water to his food, Miralax and lastly, prescription motility drugs, all to no avail. The only thing that works is the kibble. He had a full work up and an ultrasound identified thickening of the intestines, as expected. He was also unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 2 CKD, although is asymptomatic.
I’ve had no choice but to put him back on the high carb kibble. I have to juggle health issues and the constipation takes priority. As expected, his blood sugar is 288 today. I have to restart insulin immediately, right?
