Remi's eye is inflammed

So remi's eye was fine one moment. I gave him his snack and went back up five minutes later and some how his eye is red and irritated. I don't know whether he scratched it but what should I do? Can I bath it in cooled salted water?

It doesn't seem too bad and has already calmed down. I will phone the vet on Monday but honestly at the moment I can't afford to take him off to the emergency vet. I think I will just bath it in the salted water and see how it is tomorrow.

Does your vet have an out-of-hours helpline, Sarah? Might be an idea to give them a quick call and get some advice over the phone.

No I'm afraid not. None of the vets around here do. All the out of hours stuff goes to a special emergency vet. He isn't squinting anymore and I have bathed it in salted water so I think I will just see how it is in the morning. He also managed to scratch his nose slightly so I do think it is a scratch but will check again the morning.

My vet does usually check his work email over the weekend and so will take some photos in daylight and send them to him to look at.

Oh okay. I will see if they sell that in my local pharmacy tomorrow or the UK equivalent. The main thing I am concerned about is that there is an eye condition that diabetic cats can get that I might not have noticed until tonight (when he itched it)??
 
Sorry to hear that you don't have cover from your treating vets out of hours. We're lucky in that respect. Both of the local practices do their own OOH cover.

Glad to hear that Remi's discomfort seems to have lessened.
 
The most common thing diabetics get is infection. Rinsing the eye out with preservative free moisturizing drops should help flush out any small debris, without stinging from a preservative. Systane is very gentle on the eyes; I've used it myself.

It's so expensive. When remi had a pancreatitis flair I had to go a number of times and it is miles away and before any treatment they charge £160 just to see you. They are very nice though but possibly one of the most depressing places to find yourself at on a Saturday night.

Yikes! That's steep. The OOH fee is about £60 for us (home visit or surgery consult). That's from our treating vets and they're about a mile away. I've always dreaded Saoirse needing emergency treatment because even though they're close, I'm agoraphobic and there's no taxi service here in the small hours.

Those Saturday night trips must have been really tough. I feel for you.
