Remembering Stu (5 October 1997 – 28 September 2010)

Edward and I would like to remember Stu today. We don't want to dwell on that day, a year ago, when we laid him to rest. We want to remember the many happy years we shared.

Stu was our 9/11 kitty. Two weeks after 9/11 we surmised that the ASPCA shelter in New York City would have many newly orphaned cats. We had lost our kitty, Alice, to cancer 8 months earlier and decided to visit the ASPCA to discuss adopting a kitty and thus make room for the expected influx of orphans. Stu caught our eye at once. He was in the "habitat", not in a cage. When he saw us in the "viewing" room, he got up from his pillow, climbed to the top of the catwalk that went all around the habitat, walked the perimeter, jumped down, looked at us, and went back to his pillow. We knew then that he would come home with us that day. We learned that he was 4 years old and had been returned twice to the ASPCA. When we left with Stu in his cardboard carrier, they asked us to "please give him a chance."(!)

The ride home to Brooklyn was an adventure. We started out in a cab, but the streets were gridlock because so many streets were still closed from 9/11. Finally we told the driver to let us off at a subway station. By this time it was rush hour. Stu was in his carrier on the floor, between my feet, surrounded by mobs of people trying to get home. He howled! But when we finally got him to our apartment, he knew immediately that he was home. He started to explore and the first place he jumped was onto the piano. Alice had never been allowed on top of the piano, but it was very clear that it would be impossible to keep Stu off! It became one of his favorite places. His ashes are there now, together with Alice's (she finally got to go on the piano—and she (not Stu) was the cat who loved music!)

We learned quickly Stu's quirks, perhaps the reason he was twice returned: he pounded on doors, particularly at night. If a door was closed, he pounded for it to be opened. If a door was open, he pounded for it to be closed. For the first 2 years of living with Stu we were sleep-deprived. We did get used to it, sort-of. When we were in the process of moving to the Adirondacks and "visited" our house for a year when there was almost no furniture in it, he found the most resonant door in the house and drummed on it.
Other things he liked to do: "sort" the Christmas cards. We left them piled on the piano all year and he would go up there, dig through them, and find his favorite card: a photo card of Edward's colleague's children. This card was licked and licked for years. We couldn't throw it out. No other card would do!

Stu loved to play on the stairs of our apartment building, and, after we moved, in the garden. He liked to hide in the bushes and confound us! He loved his catmint plant and spent a lot of time lying underneath it, almost totally concealed when it was in full bloom.

Stu was a long-term diabetic, diagnosed in January 2006. We knew nothing about FD. We were taught how to shoot (PZI Vet) and told to bring him to the vet about once every 6 weeks for glucose testing. We shot blind for almost 4 years. PZI Vet was discontinued, and, after we moved to the country, Stu was switched to Lantus, but overdosed. We almost lost him (on 8 units bid). I found this board in January 2010 and you wonderful people here literally saved his life. But in the meantime, other health issues were developing (CRF, Hyper-T, and cancer). Stu was a big, strong kitty, but not strong enough to withstand the ravages of these diseases. I told the story of his final days in his condo of 28 September 2010.

Now Edward and I just want to say that Stu's journey here at the Lantus Forum with all of the friends we made here was full of hope and love and kindness. We will never forget the outpouring of sympathy when he crossed to the Bridge. In Lantus-Land lore, Stu had developed into quite a good chef and really enjoyed cooking with his Kitchen Krew at all the LL parties, particularly the full-moon parties, and of those, particularly the ones held at Camp Stu. I know that he is happy that Chef Mannie immediately jumped in to keep the tradition going. There will be a big party at Camp Stu on Halloween, when the veil between those here in LL and those Gone Ahead is the thinnest. Stu will be cooking at the Bridge for all of our GAs and Mannie and his Kitchen Krew (of which Rusty is a proud member) will be cooking at Camp for all of the LL kitties.

Attached are some pictures of a young-adult Stu, and some of his last Spring: (3 pics here; 3 more in part 2 of this condo)

Thank you LL for being here!

Ella & Edward (and Rusty, who understands)

(((Ella and Edward))): what a beautiful tribute to Stu and I devoured each and every word. He was so incredibly handsome and I know he is wooing all the young GA ladies and probably our Teddi Bear. How wonderful that he found his forever home with you all and that he had so many happy, healthy years. I know you and Edward spoiled him rotten and I know your forever love for him. We lit a candle in his memory on www.gratefullness.org.

drinking24 In honor and memory of the one and only Chef Stu.

What wonderful stories of Stu .. the story about his pounding on the doors brought a smile to my face, that is exactly what mocha does .. I think the top of the piano is the perfect spot for Stu and Alice .. Thanks again for sharing these stories ...

(((((((((Ella and Edward))))))))))) I was looking for Rusty's condo when I saw this. I had just lit another candle to remember Stu on Gratefulness.org. What a beautiful tribute to a very special boy. We were all in shock when you lost him and it hardly seem like a year. WE still miss him too. Tess will have a whole array of special desserts for the Halloween remembrance.

I still look out my window and remember Stu when I see the finches in "his" rosemary bush. It is dedicated to Chef Stu and Tess brings rosemary from it to all the LL parties.

lovely story of Stu's adventures! you are very patient to endure the door-drumming! he definitely got the right beans - you do know he picked you, right? the idea that we pick them? it's only an illusion to make us think we're in charge! he knew you were his people right away.

i see from the pictures how silky his fur was - it must've been wonderful. my tuxedo kitty had softer, silkier fur than any other cat i've ever petted.

such sweet memories - thanks for sharing them with us!

A beautiful tribute to a very gorgeous Chef Stu. I love how he pounded on doors and it reminded me of a stray kitty who did it with my screen door. That is a wonderful story of how he picked you and Edward at the Shelter. So cute the way he hade himself right at home jumping on the piano. Thanks for sharing his memories with us.

I'm sorry I didn't get to know Stu before I joined. What a beautiful tribute to him. Stu was meant to be yours. Maverick had a thing with closed doors LOL. Open doors too? I can see sleep deprivation there. I loved reading about him and seeing how beautiful he was in pictures. Sending you lots of hugs today.

What a beautiful tribute to sucha memorable kitty! Stu was fun, adevnturous, stubborn, sweet, loving, and was such a gorgeous boy! He and Moonie could surely be littermates, with just one difference , Moonie has less white on her lip !!
He was the Chef extrordinaire, a great party kitty, and a dear friend to all who touched his life...He was one in a million as all our dear kitties are-
-So, today we light our Copper candle to remember a very loved boy Stu!! Fly free Stu * please welcome all the GA's coming over for us!
Moonie & I will always lubs you! :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
See you on Halloween Stu Man from Moonie~!

(((Ella and Edward)))

I knew that Stu's anniversary date was coming, and I had hoped that you would open a memorial condo. How wonderful to see the pictures of him. I love the one in the forget me nots, which also appeared in last year's calendar. My calendar is permanently opened to March 2011, where Bear Man and Stu (among other friends) share a page. I also love the one of him working hard (or hardly working).

Stu will always be a legend here. His name will live on in LL party lore. Thank you for sharing his stories and his photos. He is sadly missed.

It comforts me to know that Bear Man and Stu have so many good friends at the Bridge. I love that we keep alive and honor the memories of our beloved GA's here. I do cherish the opportunity to remember our special kitties, and Stu was definitely one of the most special ones.

What a beautiful way to remember a very special kitty. Stu was really handsome, for some reason I had it in my head that he would have been long-haired like Rusty. They really do leave a hole in our hearts when they leave us don't they? I love the Christmas card story, he must have really liked that picture.

Enjoy your day remembering your boy.

((((((((Ella and Edward))))))) what a great memorial you have given him and I so enjoyed hearing the story of how you got him and of his quirks that he had ;-)

I'm so glad you opened this condo, Ella. Its hard to believe that its been a year without Stu. I know that you still miss him, but I'm glad you can celebrate his life. I so rarely come to LL anymore, but something must have made me stop by today so I could see Stu. You and Edward are wonderful parents to Rusty, just as you were to Stu. Rusty is so lucky that you opened your hearts and home for him. I'm sure that Stu is always near and always in your heart. Please take care of yourselves.

Thanks for sharing Stu's wonderful story. So glad the first 2 families did not work for Stu because he was meant for you and Edward. I think of him when I watch OTJ parties and the menu he prepared for Tuffy. It's wonderful that he trained Mannie to continue his efforts. Continued success with Rusty.

Thank you for sharing some of what makes Stu so special. I, too, think of him every time there's a menu -- especially one with catmint parfaits. It is Stu's legacy that you opened your hearts and your homes to another cat with diabetes. And it's our good fortune that Stu brought you and Edward -- and Rusty -- here.

((Ella))
I cannot believe a year has gone by already. Max and I certainly remember all of the parties
and the menus Stu would always come up with.
That is what makes LL so special. the love, the smiles and the tears.
We have gone through so many yet we are so lucky to have found this board and each other.
Stu and Rusty are so lucky to have you as their beans.

A year, how quickly it goes - how it seems forever since we held our furbabies. You were the bestest of beans. I miss Stu stories but so glad that he was able to send you Rusty. Wonder if you ever hear a whisper of the piano playing ??

Aww, that was awesome! I love Stu stories. What a great guy... including the door pounding, hahaha! (Cappi, BigMac's sister, pounds on windows, but it's much quieter than doors.) Stu was such a handsome guy in his tuxedo. You and Edward are wonderful for letting him pick you as his new parents.

I wish I could have heard him howling on that subway ride. The picture of that makes me smile. :-D

What a beautiful tribute to Stu, Ella. It brought tears to both mine and Muffin's eyes. She can hardly wait til the Halloween party so she can visit with Stu. Thank you for sharing these stories and pictures.

That was a very beautiful tribute for Stu. I'm sure that my Precious kitty is standing beside him as he's cooking up a storm at the Bridge, along with all the others who have GA. {{{{{EXTREMEHUGS}}}}}

OH, goodness, Ella, I just had to read this while I'm sitting at my desk, now didn't I...and here I am crying like a baby!! You wrote such a wonderful tribute to your (our) Stu. I didn't realize just how you came about getting him, and that story in itself is awesome. I know you miss him like crazy!!! Stu will always be in our hearts. You can bet that although I don't spend much time on the board, on Halloween I'll be sending Spot to Camp Stu to join in the festivities. Hugs to you, Edward, and Rusty!

what a wonderful tribute to Stu, and all that made him so special. He really was one special, unique kitty. This just brings back all the great memories, all the parties, all the banterings of a young apprentice chef Mannie. What fun those two had! And the camp Stu tales... before it was known as Cap Stu.

Thank you for sharing this - they never really do leave us, do they.

Chef Stu? It's me... Mannie. Halloween is coming! I am so anxious to see you again through the veil, maybe share a dish or two... Hey - I'm doing pretty good with those catmint parfaits! Miss ya buddy! ~ Mannie

I wasn't yet here when Stu ruled the kitchen. Through your stories, I think I've got a pretty clear picture in my head, though, of what a remarkably awesome cat he was. I love the pictures you posted in this condo and in part 2. I can feel how much you still miss him, but I'm glad he was at the bridge to help Teddi.

Oh Ella, what a beautiful tribute to Chef Stu. I laughed, and cried, remembering the catnip patch, and all the parties, that the Royal Chef, presided over. I see him in his chef hat and apron.
What a sweet way, you came to be family. Lucky for you, Edward, and the amazing Stu.
Thank you for the never-before-seen, photos.

Barb
