Relion Confirm Lancet Pen - Which Depth?

Hi everyone,

After a week of free-hand Buddy's BG testing, I think I'd like to try the lancet pen that came with my Relion Confirm for comparison. From numerous posts, it appears as though the pen can give a quicker, cleaner, more consistent poke. Despite my best attempts to be smooth and gentle, I poked through this morning. I feel awful!!

The thing I can't figure out is which depth to start with. I've got 26g lancets and I've been reading anywhere between a depth of 3-5. I'll most likely start using his right ear which I haven't really used a lot just so his left ear can get a little breather.

Would love feedback as to what you all did when you first started using your pens. Also any suggestions for getting the pen centered correctly? Would hate to completely miss my mark.

While I use the Relion Lancet Pen I don't use the Relion lancets in it...after a year and a half of testing not one but two diabetic cats I simply couldn't get the Relion Lancets to work at all in their lancing pen.

What I do is use the clear cap that came with mine, which doesn't allow for a change in depth, and I use Bayer Lancets in it, they work just fine and actually much better then the Relion Lancets.

When I first started using the pen I took the cap completely off and used it half free-hand and half pen. Aiming free hand and then using the pen's spring action to make the poke. After I figured out where the lancet was going to go that way I put the clear cap back on and now use it that way and I get blood every single time. Even with as much time as I have had testing it still takes me 3-4 pokes if I try to use the Relion Lancets in it. Not sure if they just aren't long enough or just aren't sharp enough when the cap is on to do the job.

I use the RelioOn Confirm pen also, and I set it at the third mark. That seems to work pretty much every time. I also hold it pretty firmly against the ear before pushing the button.

I don't think I could do it "freehand" with the lancet alone. For me the pen keeps it pretty idiot-proof :)
 
I just used it with the cap on on the 4th setting. The first time didn't seem to work but I think it was because I wasn't pressing down hard enough. Nightmares of this morning's poke-through. Second time worked well. He did so much better with the pen than with me doing it free hand!

He just doesn't like the 100% pure treats. Yet another trip to Petsmart to return and see if he'll eat some fish ones. Maybe he has a negative association with the beef/liver because that's what I used the very first night I did a blood draw!!
 
The next-to-deepest setting on the pen worked well for Shiro using the 30g lancelet, provided I got his ear to hold still. The deepest setting went through. Mind you, this was WITHOUT warming up his ear with a rice sock (we just rubbed them a bit to get them to heat up.) Also I was a bit jittery 8D; I imagine I will be able to get the 3rd setting to work well with a rice sock and more practice. Remember to hold firmly and use a cotton ball if you have a hard time getting the ear to hold still - a firm press is your best friend.
 
We also use the next to deepest setting (the pen came with my Relion Micro) and I don't have to push firmly against her ear. She doesn't like too much squeezing.
