Hello everyone,
I spent a lot of qualty time here in 2009/10 with my diabetic kitty Basil. He went into remission and stayed there the rest of his life. Now, his sister Rosie seems to be diabetic.

I say "seems" since we are awaiting the results of a fructosamine test before declaring her diabetic.

Rosie is 19 and NOT the cooperative kitty Basil was. She also has mild kidney disease.

I think I will probably be back in the Lantus forum shortly. Is 19 and a half too old to hope for remission?

Unlike Basil, who was eating dry food at diagnosis, we dont have the magic switch to wet to jumpstart us. But I can eliminate all the "in gravy" varieties of Fancy Feast. Sigh.

Hi Lydia. Sorry you have to be back here. I've heard some conflicting opinions about the value of a fructosamine test being the definitive for a diabetes Dx - can I assume she has other symptoms?

Here's hoping the gravy elimination is all that your girl Rosie needs to get her BG values under control, especially if she's not particularly cooperative.

Good luck!

I read somewhere (don't know where, sorry) that the older the cat, the better chance of remission - apparently it's because the cat has spent a much much larger percentage of it's life with a healthy functioning pancreas and normal BG levels, so that when the BG levels change the body recognises it as something different and wrong, and will accept a correction back to normal numbers more readily. Don't know how accurate that is, but it seems to make sense to me (but not to my Ivana, who is 17 yrs old and not following the rules haha).

Ah, Lydia, sorry to hear about that. Rosie sounds like she has lots of spunk for a senior cat - I like what Tara said about her possibility for remission being better given her more "experienced" pancreas. Best of luck to you!
