Both look fine to me. When I was in vet tech school the ones we used only had one scale. I was surprised to see separate. slightly different scales for cat and dogs.

Thank you for your replies!

What do you think about the prices? Aren't they too cheap to be accurate and reliable?
I ask because we only have Atago products in Japan and they are much more expensive (about $100-$400).

I do not know how a refractometer work but does't it have to be that expensive to measure USG accurately?
Can you measure cats USGs with a refractometer for human, too? The only difference is its range?

Hi BJM,
Why? Simply to monitor my diabetic kitty and his brother's USG.
I usually take free catch urine to the vet and have it tested but I heard from other caregiver that cats may have their own ranges and it would be a good idea to monitor their USG at home to know how their kidneys are doing. Am I explaining OK..?

I understand the concept of monitoring Its a rather non-specific measure, so I'm wondering what you think its going to tell you. Do these cats have renal disease?

You might find this useful: Merck Veterinary Manual section on the Urinary System.

The Atago ones are top of the line but the other ones are fine. These are low-tech products and they all use the same principle (unless you get a digital one). When I looked before I think the Atago has built-in temperature compensation. That is not really necessary if you measure at room temperature.

So "cheap" does not mean they are bad quality in this case. Good!

My non-diabetic cat has a bit shrunk kidneys. A bit.. and drinking and urinating a lot. My diabetic one just started to urinate more often.
I cannot afford an Atago but ones on ebay, I can.. but I did not want to spend on something unreliable.

Thank you for your help! And thanks for the link!

Mami
