I haven't posted in ages, but am happy to see so many names I recognize still offering help :)

Snickers is still doing great--she will be 20 on June 30th! Nine years diabetic in August (she had 3 years of remission after the first six months of treatment), she receives .5 to 1 unit of BCP PZI every day or two depending on her readings. She doesn't get around quite as well as she used to, but she can still jump on the bed, and has no problem letting me know when she needs attention or dinner is not to her liking!

Our recent trouble has been with our big orange guy, Poochie. getting recurring UTIs about every four months. When he's sick he pees on our kitchen table, although he also does this when he's upset so sometimes it's hard to know what's going on. He is on a canned low-carb diet, and we give him low phosphorous food as well, plus some Cosequin.

DH will take him in for another check-up, but I haven't been happy that the vet's course of treatment has been Covenia (DH wasn't aware of the issues with it and so didn't say anything). Suggestions on what would be better for him?

Should we look into giving him D-Mannose?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Your vet needs a culture and sensitivity to see what antibiotics work for the infection. Convenia is not so great for a UTI.

How were the UTIs diagnosed?
Some infections require a month on antibiotics and/or a different antibiotic. A culture and sensitivity , as already discussed, is really required.

We had an x-ray back in the fall--no stones then. I'll have to check the vet receipts to see if he had a C&S last time (in April)... I know he had one in December. DH handles all Poochie's visits since it's "his" cat. In January Poochie had a bout with vomiting and diarrhea, and I went back and checked the vet bill and saw that he'd been given Covenia back then. I told DH he shouldn't have gotten that, but back in April, DH didn't say anything and they gave it to him AGAIN. Twice, in fact!

No other peeing episodes, and he's had good urine output in the box yesterday and today so far, so we'll keep an eye on him.

BJM--just noticed you are in Columbus--we moved here to Grove City from Cincinnati about a year ago. Any vet recommendations? We've been using Stringtown Animal Hospital but I'm not overly thrilled with our experience there so far.

I've got a few I added to my phone for questions like that:
Dr Virgil McKee
Dr Long healthy Pets of Bryn Lor
RASCAL - NW Columbus, just outside 270 at 161
Health and Harmony
E Hilliard Vet Svcs - veterinary dental specialist
NorthArlington Animal Clinic
Med vet - Worthington, for emergency services when you don't want to wait for all the student vets to collaborate and figure it out. Very, very pricey.

Take a look at my signature link Vet Interview Topics for some questions to ask to make sure you can work with the vet.
These names are based on only 1 or 2 mentions to me from folks I trust fairly well. Even so, your mileage may vary.

Yes, after nine years of dealing with vets about FD, I'm pretty well-versed! I had one in Cincinnati tell me I was "going to give Snickers diabetes" because I was giving her insulin (he wouldn't even look at my testing log). That was four years after she was diagnosed. He was fired, obviously!
