HI
I have not been on in several years, mostly because I have not had a diabetic cat in a long time (but have learned a lot about other cat diseases in the interim.) My neighbor's cat just got Dx so I pulled out my supplies and gave her a quick 101 session on testing and dosing and curves and numbers in advance of her vet visit.
I have 7 cats currently, one with IBD that I cured giving NV Raw Instinct exclusively for 4 weeks, then just a bit with regular canned since then for past 3m. He had lost ALL the hair on his body and ~3.5 lbs and gained the weight back in 1 month and all the hair grew back in about 2. Vet wanted to put him on predisnone but I wanted to try diet first.
I have another cat with CRF and I had noticed a couple of years ago that he had NOT progressed since I started giving him 1/2 organic food (was giving Newmans and Organix). So I then turned ALL my cats to 100% organic. I think that Benji has progressed--he has lost some weight in last 6m. And we have a vet visit for next Tues to check his numbers. (Or he has hyperthyroid perhaps--apparently he has a heart murmur and that is new.)
My other cat Chloe got Dx with hyperthyroid last year and after lots of investigating I decided to do the Radioactive Iodine. I researched it and talked the vet into giving a much smaller dose--2 mm vs the 3.5 that the vet was going to give and what they considered a 'low' dose. I had researched and also corresponded with that hyperthyroid vet in NYC, forgot his name and showed the vet his research on how the lower doses worked at preventing hypothyroid. Chloe was cured and dropped to normal within 1m and now about 10m later, thyroid still normal.
ANYWAY, long story short, I have not kept up on cat foods but was dismayed to read at some point, maybe on Dr Lisa's about how much higher fat many of the premium brands are. I USED to give my cats Wellness and Core and a few of those other brands until I decided to give 100% organic. I stopped giving Newman's when I realized that they put carrageenan in there. So for past...year?...I've been giving exclusvely ORGANIX and only 2 flavors the green one and the orange one and the dark pink one (chicken/turkey). Also they are low phosphorus for Benji my CRF cat.
Anyway, lately my cats--ALL of them seem to be frequently going off this food. Like they ALL will not want to eat it. Leads me to believe that something is wrong with the food, happens more with the green turkey/spinach flavor. (I have never fed seafood flavors and rarely give beef.)
So I want to try some new brands and now I'm think maybe I won't stick to the organic-only.
What are some good new brands that are not super high in fat, but still low carb and high quality protein? (Just asking first before I weed thru the new list) Would rather get some recs so I don't order a case that my cats won't eat.
thank you!
