Hello fellow UKers. Am trying to make things a tad easier for one of our newbies who is looking for advice/recommendations for a meter available in the UK. We all remember what this was like when we were starting out so I wondered if you could all chime in on this thread and say what meter you are using, what you like about it, any special features it has, and where you get supplies from? Hopefully Looby can then see that info separately instead of looking through her other questions which may also be about food, insulins, etc!
Thanks!

I use the One Touch Ultra. But many UK'ers like the Accuchek Aviva, which only needs a very small blood sample. The Accuchek Aviva should be relatively easy to buy from a pharmacy or online. And the test strips can bought ongoingly on Ebay far more cheaply than from a pharmacy. (The test strips are the main cost of hometesting)

Looby, I think you have insurance? If that's the case then your insurance might cover the cost of the pet-specific meter, Alphatrak. If it doesn't then you could still consider the Alphatrak, but it is more expensive to use than other meters.

I would suggest that it is worth getting a glucose meter, and familiarising yourself with how it works (you can practice on yourself or a willing friend/partner/postman...;)), even if you don't feel able to hometest straight away. Then, if you find yourself in a situation where you are concerned about Smiffy, you will have the means to test her blood glucose rather than having to guess whether her blood glucose is low or high....

I've got an Accu-Chek Aviva as a backup meter. Works fine. Easy to use. Strips reasonable (Morrison's Pharmacy have good prices - or check on Ebay/Amazon for bundle deals).

This is sterling advice from Eliz.
